Robins Announce New Boss

10th May, 2010

Selby Town have announced their new management team for the 2010/2011 season.

An official statement from the club reads: "Selby Town FC would like to thank Bob Lyon and Gary Cygan for the tremendous work they have done for the club during their tenure.

"They have consistently produced a very good team and may have been let down by the committee in that the funding has not been as consistent.

"Andy Bodle and Bob's family also need mentioning for all their hard work behind the scenes.

"The announcement of Bob's resignation came as a surprise but he did honour his agreement to see out the season.

"It is testament to his managerial expertise that he managed to field a team after losing so many players when the money ran out.

"The lads who played during the last month were tremendous and we would like to express our thanks to them also.

"We now have to announce the appointment of a new manager whose name is Michael Gray and his assistant John Steeples.

"We hope they can carry on where Bob and Gary left off and take Selby Town forward into a new era.

"We are hoping to organise a 'Meet the Manager' evening during the next few weeks to give the supporters and players an opportunity to get to know them and make them welcome.

"The club were very sad at losing Bob and Gary but we have to move on after Bob decided he could take the club no further."

The new management team have also released a statement.

It reads: "We are pleased to be given the opportunity to manage a good club like Selby Town.

"It's a big step for us both from being the assistant manager and coach at Armthorpe Welfare but we have always thought Selby were a bit of a sleeping giant in non-league football and are therefore relishing the challenge.

"We wish Des Bennett all the success he deserves for all his hard work he does at Armthorpe Welfare and we are proud of what we have achieved together in the past five seasons.

"We would like to thank Bob & Gary for all the hard work they have done at Selby.

"Having played Selby a number of times, they play the game how it should be played and we hope to continue in the same style.

"John and myself have come from a good football background, John having been a professional footballer and myself playing at a high standard.

"I have been a coach at Grimsby Town School of Excellence for the past eleven years, achieving the UEFA B licence and in the process of obtaining my UEFA A licence.

"We know this League inside out and, given our good contacts in non-league football, we hope that this will help us achieve our goals.

"We are hoping that the players who played at Selby last year come to pre-season and see what we are about. The door is always open to anybody who would like to play at this standard.

"We are hoping to confirm pre-season games against Goole AFC, York City, Grimsby Town, Grimsby Borough and Brigg Town.

"We are also hoping to organise a trip down to London to play against Thurrock and East Thurrock who play in the Ryman Premier League.

"We want to get the fans to come to pre-season games and get behind the team for the forthcoming season.

"Having met the chairman Ralph Pierce and secretary Tom Arkley, we can see how passionate they are about the club.

"We are looking forward to working together to get the club stable and moving in the right direction both on and off the field.

"This will be achieved through hard work starting today and we are both excited and eager for success.

"Having gone to the FA Vase Final last weekend, we saw at first hand the standard needed to achieve success and Whitley Bay definitely being the benchmark team.

"Looking forward to your support, Michael Gray and John Steeples."
