Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2018/19 #57

7th April, 2019

Grimsby Borough narrowly missed out on lifting the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy for the first time as they were beaten on penalties by Deeping Rangers in midweek.

The Wilderness Boys, who have been runners-up twice before in the competition, were hoping it would be third time lucky, especially after they held their United Counties League Premier Division opponents to a 0-0 draw at Lincoln United's ground.

But, it was Rangers who prevailed 4-3 in the penalty shoot-out as Borough were beaten in the final for the second year running on spot-kicks.

Elsewhere, there was plenty of league action with Penistone Church moving to within three points of Premier Division leaders Worksop Town as they demolished relegation-haunted visitors Hall Road Rangers 7-1.

Church were 4-0 up after 23 minutes thanks to a Nathan Keightley double, added to by goals from Ashley Ellis and Elliott Firth, before James Nichols pulled one back for Rangers.

But, a Sam Scrivens goal, a third from Keightley - this time from the penalty spot - and Kieran Ryan's 61st minute strike completed the rout for the home side.

Rangers stay just outside the drop zone as the two sides below them, Goole AFC and Harrogate Railway Athletic, were also beaten.

Goole were edged out 3-2 at Handsworth Parramore as Carl Stewart's double was not enough to beat a home side whose goals came from Rikki Paylor, Joshua Nodder and Jed Phillips in a fifteen-minute second-half spell.

Meanwhile, a hat-trick for Sean Hunter, added to by strikes from Mark Simpson and Lee Turner condemned the Rail to a 5-0 loss at Garforth Town, a victory that means the Miners are mathematically safe from relegation.

Albion Sports also won to confirm their Premier Division status for next season, Eddie Church, Lamin Janneh and Alhassane Keita netting in a 3-0 victory at Athersley Recreation who drop below the Lions to seventeenth.

Joe Pugh's late double kept Staveley Miners Welfare in sixth as they won 2-0 at home to Thackley, a point ahead of Maltby Main who were also victorious.

Cameron Rigby, Jordan Turner and Ross Duggan got on the scoresheet for Main as they beat hosts Barton Town 3-0.

And, Eccleshill United move up a place to tenth after Antony Brown's 70th minute winner in a single-goal victory at Knaresborough Town who drop to ninth.

In Division One, Hallam and Nostell Miners Welfare kept their title hopes alive with victories with Hallam moving up into second, five points off the summit, following a 3-1 home win over bottom side FC Bolsover.

Kieran Watson grabbed all of the home side's goals, one from the penalty spot, whilst there was also a spot-kick converted by Jack Warwick for the visitors.

Nostell were 2-0 winners over visitors Skegness Town, Jack Owen opening the scoring after 54 minutes and Danny Edwards sealing the win in stoppage time that moves his side into fourth position.

Harworth Colliery have moved to within two points of safety in what is turning into a thrilling battle to avoid relegation with a priceless 2-0 win at Armthorpe Welfare, Thomas Mullen and Matthew Robinson with the goals at the start of the second-half.

Callum Mawbey struck twice in a 2-1 home win for Dronfield Town over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic to leapfrog their opponents into sixth spot.

Liam Flanagan's double sealed a 3-0 victory ninth-placed Selby Town at the side just above them Parkgate, after Charlie Clamp had broken the deadlock early on.

And, there were home wins for Swallownest and AFC Emley with Alex Lill's hat-trick helping Swallownest to a 4-1 defeat of Shirebrook Town and Emley beat East Yorkshire Carnegie 2-1, courtesy of Daniel Naidole's double.
