Toyne Gets Birthday Surprise
5th November, 2009
Who says the fun has gone out of football? Certainly not Dinnington Town, says the Rotherham Advertiser.
They report that Dinno chief Steve Toyne was reduced to tears by an unexpected birthday treat last Saturday.
The long-serving boss was in the dressing room at Phoenix Park before their match with Brodsworth Welfare when the lights went out.
He thought there'd been a power cut until the Town players appeared with a big birthday cake and sung 'Happy Birthday' to him.
And, when he took to the pitch, the hundred spectators sang out: "For he's a jolly good fellow."
Toyne, who turned 65 on the day of the match, said: "I told people that the water on my face was the rain, but it wasn't really.
"It was a very emotional moment for me and it made all the kit washing, the grass cutting and other jobs I do around the club worthwhile.
"I've got to thank the players, the staff and the supporters for a lovely gesture.
"In these days when the game is so often in the headlines for the wrong reasons, it showed the other side."
