Freak Floodlight Failure Hits Robins
29th November, 2007
Selby Town's home game with Arnold was postponed on Saturday after a freak 'million-to-one chance' incident caused a floodlight failure.
Club officials accidentally cut through an underground cable while spiking the Flaxley Road pitch prior to kick off in a bid to combat the inevitable wet weather.
Maintenance workers were unable to repair the damage in time for the game, but it is hoped normal order will be restored by the weekend.
Secretary Tommy Arkley said: "The postponement was disappointing given the circumstances. It was a million to one chance a spike hitting the cable where it did."
The bizarre incident was a double blow for the Robins after vandals once again ran amok at their Richard Street home.
Yobs smashed two windows in the press box and damaged recently repaired seating in the director's enclosure.
Tommy added: "No matter how many locks we put on all the gates, these vandals are determined to get in.
"They have bent the steel fencing in several places and either climb over locked gates or fences to cause as much damage as they can.
"We have caught them on top of the clubhouse roof before now. It is extremely frustrating."
