Volunteers Boost Pikes UniBond Push

11th July, 2007

Twenty-seven people turned up to hear what Pickering Town need to progress into the UniBond League.

Chairman and Secretary Tony Dunning and Operations Manager Alan Brenkley outlined their position at a special meeting held at their Recreation Club ground on Friday.

The club officials said the club was short of helpers, short of officials to run the club and short of funds to progress.

At a recent meeting with the Football Association's northern official on the restructure of the non-league scene, the Pikes were shocked to discover that for them to progress up the ladder to the Unibond League was not the huge problem they had been led to believe.

What is needed is better, modern outside toilets for both male and females at the scoreboard end and a permanent fence on the cricket side of the ground from September the 1st to April the 30th each year.

The specification for this fence is now in the club's hands and, with this job done, should the Pikes win the Premier Division of the North Counties East League in the forthcoming season, promotion would just about be guaranteed. The runners-up spot may also guarantee the club promotion.

So the officials told the meeting what was needed to achieve this ambition was helpers, officials and real cash.

Additional volunteers came forward at the meeting. Geoff Raw, who has been a fixtures secretary, will join the club's management team along with Brian Wood, who becomes the club's commercial manager.

He is the father of the club's player/manager Mike Wood. Norman Dade has also rejoined the management team and Anthony Handley stated his desire to help the club forward.

It is the club's intention to put in place a better financial structure and also a better management structure as the club strives to have much sounder foundations in place.

Chairman Tony Dunning said how pleased he was with the meeting and the number of people who attended, and the progress made.
