Midweek Match Review

10th January, 2008

Winterton Rangers regained top spot in the NCEL Premier Division in a midweek where the weather played havoc with the fixture list.

Horrific conditions on Tuesday night saw the top-flight match between Thackley and Glasshoughton Welfare postponed before kick-off.

And, two Division One games were abandoned as freak weather including gale force winds, hail, heavy rain and snow swept across the area.

The match between Gedling Town and Rossington Main was called off after 78 minutes with the home side winning 2-1.

And, Pontefract Collieries versus Hall Road Rangers was abandoned early in the second period with the visitors leading by a single goal.

Both games will be replayed.

And, in the remaining five matches, four of them were stopped for a time by the referee in the second period but all resumed to a finish.

Winterton took full advantage as they came from behind in the last nineteen minutes of their game at Maltby Main to go two points clear at the top of the table.

Scott Somerville had put Maltby in front as they were looking to avoid a five-match losing run.

But, a Mark Coggin own goal brought scores level before Mark Whitehouse grabbed a brace to claim the points for the visitors.

Third-placed Glapwell lost ground as they fell to their first home defeat of the season against Nostell Miners Welfare.

Ian Brown had put the Hall Corner outfit ahead on 27 minutes before Dave Nicholas struck twice in the second period to give the visitors the victory.

Arnold Town and South Normanton Athletic played out a goalless draw at Gedling Road.

Both of the two surviving Division One games ended in 1-1 scorelines.

Dave Watson had put Tadcaster Albion ahead on 34 minutes but Gavin Birmingham claimed a point for visitors AFC Emley from the penalty spot soon after.

And, in a local derby at Carnarvon Street, Teversal took the lead in the ninth minute through Dean Short before Adam Lillie levelled matters for Rainworth Miners Welfare halfway through the second period.

Wednesday night saw a further postponement as Mickleover Sports' home game against Armthorpe Welfare was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

But, there were plenty of goals in the remaining Premier Division clash, with all six going to home side Hallam against Eccleshill United.

Two first-half strikes from Rob Ward, who is on loan from UniBond side Sheffield, put them well on their way before a couple from James Tevendale and one each from Scott Bates and Will Tomlinson made it a night to forget for the Eagles.

And, Scarborough Athletic will host York City in the Semi-Finals of the North Riding Senior Cup after a 2-0 win at Thornaby.

Ryan Blott's 35th-minute strike and Crag Hogg's goal at the start of the second period sealed the win for the Seadogs.
