Saturday Match Review
16th December, 2007
On a second successive weekend disrupted by bad weather, there was disappointment in the FA Vase as two NCEL sides bowed out of the competition.
Gedling Town twice let a two-goal lead slip as they were beaten 4-3 at Midland Football Alliance outfit Studley.
Tim Wilks and Lee Soar had put the Division One leaders two-up by the interval before Robbie Ager pulled one back for the hosts on 65 minutes.
When Alan Jefferies made it 3-1 with twenty minutes remaining, it looked as though Gedling would progress.
But, two goals from Craig Pountney and a Kieran Cross strike turned the game completely on its head in the final quarter-of-an-hour to bring heartbreak to John Humphries' men.
And, in the other Third Round match, Hallam were comfortably beaten 3-0 at North West Counties side Salford City.
Goals from Tommy Turner, Kenny Tudor and Carl Lomax condemned the Sandygate outfit to a defeat that could have been a lot larger.
There were away victories in both of the Premier Division matches that survived the cold snap.
Arnold Town moved up to seventh with a 4-3 win at Armthorpe Welfare.
Anton Bonnick struck twice in the first half to give the visitors the lead by the interval before Liam Radford halved the deficit for Welfare in the opening minute of the second period.
Mark Clarke added a third for the Eagles and Bonnick completed his hat-trick on 75 to give them a 4-1 lead.
Welfare once again came back into it with a brace from Nathan Iley, one a penalty, in the last three minutes but Arnold held on for the win.
Armthorpe dropped to sixth as a result of that defeat and were replaced in fifth by Selby Town who won 2-0 at Parkgate.
Bruno Holden and Steve Lyon got the goals, one in each half, to claim the points for the Robins.
And, in Division One, Bottesford Town moved up into fifth by winning the only game that took place.
A twelfth-minute opener from Craig Mitchell was added to by Kev Larkin on 37 for a 2-0 win in an uninspiring match at home to Staveley Miners Welfare.
