Saturday Match Review
9th December, 2007
A weekend that was overshadowed by the tragic death of Hall Road Rangers youngster Karl Henry in a car accident also saw many games postponed due to the bad weather.
Two of the three FA Vase games fell victim to the weather with Hallam's visit to Salford City called off just five minutes before kick-off due to a waterlogged pitch.
That game will now be played on Saturday the 15th of December, as will the other cancelled game, Studley v Gedling Town.
In the one match that did go ahead, Winterton Rangers moved through to the Fourth Round draw in an all-NCEL clash at home to Pickering Town.
Rob Northen picked up his 22nd goal of the season to put Rangers ahead on 55 minutes before Danny Clarke added their second with a minute remaining.
Liam Salt pulled one back for the Pikes in injury time but they could not find another to force extra-time.
Three games survived the bad weather in the NCEL Premier Division.
Liversedge moved up to second and are behind leaders Winterton on goal difference after a 2-1 victory at bottom side Brodsworth Welfare.
But, they had to wait until injury time to pick up the three points through Matty Fahy.
Earlier, they had cancelled out a Brodsworth first half opener from Sean Gorman with a Nicky Boshell penalty at the start of the second period.
Sedge move above Glapwell who lost their first league game of the season at Selby Town.
For the second match running, the visitors found themselves down to ten men early on as Matt Varley was sent off after twelve minutes due to deliberate handball.
Andrew Hart converted the resultant penalty to put the Robins ahead before Bruno Holden increased their advantage in the opening minute of the second period.
Ian Brown gave Glapwell some hope when he pulled one back with ten minutes remaining.
But, substitute Tom Matthews put the matter beyond doubt in the final seconds to give Selby a 3-1 victory that moved them up to sixth.
Long Eaton United went goal crazy at Nostell Miners Welfare as they climbed to eleventh.
A Matthew McCaul penalty put the away side in the lead in the opening quarter-of-an-hour before Oli Johnson levelled matters soon after.
But, goals in the final twenty minutes from Alex Steadman and Michael Buckley gave Long Eaton a comfortable 4-1 scoreline leaving Nostell Miners Welfare without a win in eleven matches.
There were only two matches in Division One but there was no shortage of goals with twelve hitting the back of the net.
Eight of those were at the Euronics Ground as third-placed Barton Town Old Boys shared the spoils in a 4-4 draw with Dinnington who climbed up into fourth with the point.
Barton were two-up after just sixteen minutes as Matty McKay and Mark Anderson made it a perfect start for the home side.
Dinnington halved the advantage on 32 through Simon Mirfin before Craig Burdick made it 3-1 five minutes before the interval.
Ant Lynam brought the visitors back into the match on 49 minutes but Barton restored their two goal lead once again through Roy Raspin five minutes later.
Once again, though, Dinnington showed great resolve as Michael Blythen added their third before the hour mark and Lynam grabbed his second and their equaliser with just nine minutes remaining.
In the other Division One match, Leeds Met Carnegie moved up to sixth with a comfortable 4-0 victory at home to Yorkshire Amateur.
Kev Ryan and John Forrest had given them a two-goal advantage before half-time.
Then, Ryan grabbed his second before Mark Taylor concluded the scoring with seventeen minutes remaining to bring cheer to the majority of the 32 hardy souls who braved the appalling weather at Throstle Nest.
