Weekend Match Review

8th October, 2007

Eight NCEL clubs have joined Glasshoughton Welfare in the Second Round Proper of the FA Vase at the weekend.

The biggest winners were Gedling Town who cantered to a 4-0 victory at home to Pegasus Juniors with Tim Wilks leading the way with two along with further strikes from Ben Cobley and Carl Westcarr.

Winterton Rangers and Eccleshill United also used home advantage to its fullest although Rangers were just seconds away from a replay when an injury-time Rob Northen penalty gave them a single-goal victory over Thornaby.

Eccleshill were also made to scrap even though they were two-up within 22 minutes thanks to Cameron Kerin as Ben O'Melia pulled one back for their local rivals Thackley and kept it an entertaining encounter right up to the final whistle.

Five sides ? Hallam, Borrowash Victoria, Long Eaton United, Rainworth Miners Welfare and Pickering Town - went through winning tricky away ties.

A James Tevendale brace after a Scott Bates opener helped Hallam to a 3-1 win at Ashton Town of the North West Counties League.

Two goals in the final quarter of their game at Shifnal Town saw Borrowash Victoria progress with a 4-2 win, John Guy and Jamie Pawley's strikes adding to Sukhjit Heer's 40th minute goal and Andy Calladine's penalty.

Glen Nattriss and Malc Brown preserved Rainworth's excellent start to the season as they claimed a 2-0 victory at Stone Dominoes.

Long Eaton United were on the verge of going out at Hinckley Downes until David Wilkinson levelled the match at 1-1 in the 90th minute.

Hinckley regained the lead in extra-time, the only tie to go a further thirty minutes, but Alex Steadman and Wilkinson scored in the second period to take Long Eaton through in a thriller.

And, Pickering's 3-2 win at Tow Law Town saw all but one of the goals scored in the first half as Michael MacNaughton and Ricky Greening pulled the Pikes from two down by the break and Chris Batchelor grabbed the winner just after the interval.

Glapwell's unbeaten start to the season was halted at the fourteenth match as they were beaten 3-1 at home to Oldbury United, Matt Varley's penalty on 63 minutes was not enough to keep them alive in the competition.

Armthorpe Welfare were also dumped out of the Vase at home as a penalty five minutes from time saw them lose by a single goal to Jarrow Roofing.

The remaining NCEL sides all tasted defeat on their travels with Parkgate being the heaviest sufferers, on the wrong end of a 5-0 scoreline at Kirkham & Wesham.

AFC Emley and Mickleover Sports also failed to find the net ? Emley were beaten 2-0 at Bootle whilst Sports lost 1-0 at Cradley Town.

And, Pontefract Collieries, Selby Town and Maltby Main all scored once but it was not enough as they lost to Northallerton Town, Seaham Red Star and Squires Gate, respectively.

There were four matches in the Premier Division with the biggest movers of the day being Arnold Town.

They climbed to sixth in the table after a 3-1 win at Brodsworth Welfare, Chris Freestone grabbing two to take him to the top of the league goalscorers' chart with eleven.

All the other three games ended 1-1.

Leaders Nostell Miners Welfare picked up a point to move five clear at the top of the table as Paul Bedford's 65th-minute strike cancelled out an opener for hosts Shirebrook Town from Jamie Smith.

Julien Wilkes earned Glasshoughton Welfare a draw at the start of the second half after Richard Batley had scored an own goal to give hosts Lincoln Moorlands Railway the lead just before the interval.

Damien Melvin put Liversedge in the lead at home to South Normanton Athletic on 36 minutes but the Shiners levelled through Nick Ghislanzoni on 47.

Top spot in Division One changed hands yet again as Barton Town Old Boys moved to the summit with a 3-0 win at Barton Town Old Boys.

Gareth Barlow scored in the opening minute before Matty McKay sealed the win with two early in the second period.

An injury-time Sam Holmes winner saw Teversal claim a dramatic 3-2 victory at Rossington Main as they came from two goals behind to take the points and move up into third place.

Tadcaster Albion and Scarborough Athletic both climb the table after sharing the spoils in a 2-2 draw at Athletic in front of 486 spectators.

Rob Pinder and Tom Barker scored for the hosts whilst Peter Vasey and Danny Gray made it a fruitful day for Albion.

Bottesford Town are now eighth after Phil Jackman and Paul Chatterton helped them to a comfortable 2-0 win at home to Hall Road Rangers, ending the visitors' one-hundred percent record in the league.

Leeds Met Carnegie's roller-coaster season continued with a 4-0 thumping of Worsbrough Bridge as an Andy Jackson brace helped them move up to ninth.

And, Dinnington Town picked up their first points of the campaign as they won 4-1 at Yorkshire Amateur as two each from Ant Lynam and Matt Wragg saw them pick up a very comfortable victory at Bracken Edge.
