Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2017/18 #80

23rd May, 2018

Both Bridlington Town and Penistone Church produced fine performances but sadly came up short in their County Cup finals in the past week.

The Seasiders were looking to retain the East Riding Senior Cup that they had held for the previous three seasons as they faced Hull City's academy side at the Roy West Centre in Hull last Tuesday.

Max Sheaf gave the young Tigers a 23rd minute lead but that was quickly cancelled out by Christopher Jenkinson's equaliser from close range.

However, Hull regained their advantage through a first-time finish from Keane Lewis-Potter at the end of what had been a dramatic opening half-hour to the encounter.

Bridlington battled hard to try and get themselves level once again and ended the game the stronger despite being reduced to ten men on 76 minutes when James Williams was dismissed for a foul just outside the penalty area.

But, they could not find a way past the Hull keeper as they were ultimately beaten 2-1.

Seven days later, Penistone met former NCEL side Shaw Lane in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup Final at Sheffield United's Bramall Lane ground and they produced one of the most exciting games of the season.

Penistone led three times but were denied by an extra-time own goal as their Evo-Stik Northern Premier League opponents won 4-3 to retain the trophy.

Tom Brennan broke the deadlock on seventeen minutes with a header but Church were pegged back before Nathan Keightley gave them a goal advantage going into half-time.

Shaw Lane restored parity once more only for Andrew Ring to make it 3-2 for Penistone on 56 but the drama continued as Shaw Lane forced a further half-hour with their third equaliser twenty minutes from time.

And, Church would be denied a famous victory by a cruel twist of fate as Brett Lovell diverted a cross into his own net in the first period of extra-time.

Both sides hit the woodwork whilst Shaw Lane had a penalty saved as the game ebbed and flowed but it was the higher-ranked side who held on for the win as Penistone took the plaudits for their part in an entertaining cup tie.
