Baris NCEL Review - Season 2011/12 #52

12th April, 2012

Bridlington Town have returned to the top of the Baris NCEL Premier Division as the title race continues to hot up going into the final three weeks of the season.

The Seasiders were 2-1 winners at home to Armthorpe Welfare on Monday afternoon to climb above Retford United, two points clear of the Badgers who did not play.

The league's top two scorers, Craig Hogg and Josh Greening, had them in a comfortable lead by the hour mark and, although Leo Fortune-West pulled one back in the 79th minute, Bridlington made sure they hold the advantage going into their last four games.

Brighouse Town moved up into third, Tom Matthews with the only goal of the game at Hall Road Rangers, but they cannot catch the top two.

They went above Scarborough Athletic whose title chances were mathematically ended with a 3-0 defeat at Arnold Town, Chris Freestone with a second minute opener added to by a first-half brace by Josh Schofield.

Long Eaton United were beaten 2-0 at Pickering Town with second half goals from Tom Fenwick and Carl Stewart meaning that they could still get sucked into a relegation battle.

Parkgate were dramatic 4-3 victors at Thackley, Danny Major scoring the winner in injury time whilst an Alex Hallam double earned Liversedge a 2-0 home triumph over Nostell Miners Welfare.

Staveley Miners Welfare's game at home to Barton Town Old Boys was abandoned after 59 minutes with the hosts trailing 6-0 - the League is currently investigating the reasons behind the game's premature end.

Handsworth's grip on the Division One title was strengthened without them even playing.

Despite taking a 34th minute lead through Lee Holmes, second placed Worksop Parramore went down 2-1 at home to Dinnington Town, a Scott Lowe own goal and a winner from Simon Mirfin producing a surprise result.

It means Handsworth stay six points clear of Parramore who have a game in hand.

And, Glasshoughton Welfare's title challenge is all but over after they were beaten 4-0 at home by Rossington Main in the only Tuesday game.

Brandon Fallon, William McGhie and Dean Sidebottom had put the game beyond doubt before the interval and Fallon added his second of the evening in the 67th minute.

Glasshoughton are now twelve points behind the leaders with four to play.

In the other four games on Monday, Grimsby Borough moved out of the bottom two with a single goal victory at home to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic, Andrew Taylor with the vital strike just after the hour mark.

And, Louth Town won by the same scoreline against visitors Hallam, Jamie Coulson with their goal at around the same time.

Jacob Ashley struck both Teversal's goals in their 2-1 home victory over Askern Villa and a Kyle Ludlow own goal six minutes from time snatched Eccleshill United a 3-3 draw over visitors Shirebrook Town.

There was joy, however, for Shirebrook in the League Cup Semi-Finals that were played on Wednesday night but the Division One side had to wait for it against their Premier Division opponents at Langwith Road.

A Steven McGurk own goal and a Robert Sanderson strike in the opening half-hour had seemingly put Winterton Rangers well on their way to victory.

But, Richard Guest pulled one back for Shirebrook on 65 minutes and parity was quickly restored when Julian Topliss found the net to make it 2-2.

That is how it stayed through extra-time and it was Shirebrook who prevailed, 4-2 in the penalty shoot-out.

In the end-of-season finale, they will face Thackley who won 3-1 at Barton Town Old Boys.

Liam Moore and Chris Davey had Thackley two up by the seventeenth minute and, although Gareth Barlow pulled one back for the hosts early in the second period, Davey made sure of the victory as the game went towards injury time.
