Race stands down as Miners chairman

26th September, 2021

Toolstation NCEL Premier Division club Maltby Main are on the search for a new chairman after it was announced that Wilf Race is standing down with immediate effect.

The Muglet Lane side said in a statement that to end his eight year spell in the role was a difficult decision for him but he felt that the time is right now to step aside.

The news was initially announced in the club's matchday programme for Saturday's Buildbase FA Vase clash at home to Bury AFC with his programme notes saying: "A new leader is needed to continue to develop the club and its facilities.

"I had set my mind on stepping down once the Town Council took over the lease which, in my opinion, will be a springboard for the club to secure vital grants and funding that we have been denied over the years.

"It’s been a long and eventful journey during my tenure and most of the days have been fantastic. I am proud to have been at the helm and I wish my successor the very best of luck.

"It will always be a part of me 'The little club with the big heart'."

A statement was then released on Main's website thanking Race for his time in the role and that CEO Darrell Johnson will take on the chairman's role on an interim basis until a replacement is found.

It said: "It’s a sad day, but also a good day to remember how far this club has come since [Wilf] began the role.

"The difference is immeasurable to what we had as a club then to what we have now - regarding people off the pitch, facilities improvement despite issues in the way of this; and a team competing at our level well.

"All this has been a big plus in his tenure and he has secured club legend status now."

Moving on to the search for a new chairman, the statement added: "We need someone who has the time and effort this role brings, the drive to approach businesses and people to raise sponsorship and funds for the club and be part of the club's finance drive.

"A good understanding of grassroots football at this level is essential.

"They are the top name and face of the club and will be our spokesperson at monthly meetings.

"We need them to represent the football club with positivity at all times too.

"It’s a fantastic club, one that is in a very good place and has a very good team on and off the pitch. Come and see us if you’re interested.

"Message the club at maltbymainfc@hotmail.com and we will pass it to Darrell to contact you further."
