Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2019/20 #1

4th August, 2019

A hat-trick from Archie Brown helped Goole AFC to the biggest victory on the opening day of the 2019/20 Toolstation NCEL season, a Saturday afternoon full of goals that suggests it will be another year of drama in the Premier Division and Division One.

The Vikings, who narrowly avoided relegation last season, raced into a 5-0 lead by the interval in their home clash with Athersley Recreation, Brown's triple added to by a brace from Devonte Newman-Morton and then a sixth from Reagan Waud early in the second period.

Garforth Town and Yorkshire Amateur began their campaigns with 3-0 victories with Adam Porritt, Sean Hunter and Mark Simpson netting for Garforth in a home win over Handsworth whilst Ashley Flynn struck twice after Fernando Moke's opener for the Ammers at Barton Town.

AFC Mansfield played most of their home clash with Knaresborough Town down to ten men after a first-half sending-off for Jack Warwick but Ross Duggan got both of their goals in a 2-0 victory to start their return to the NCEL in winning ways.

Bottesford Town, Hemsworth Miners Welfare and newcomers Silsden all started with single-goal wins, Jacob Fenton scoring twice as Bottesford beat visitors Albion Sports 3-2.

The other two sides picked up 2-1 wins with Rikki Paylor and Declan Parker claiming a home victory for Hemsworth over promoted side Grimsby Borough whilst Khurram Shazad and Aiden Kirby found the net for Silsden at Penistone Church.

The opening day's remaining three Premier Division games ended all square, Nathan Walker's late penalty grabbing a 3-3 draw for Bridlington Town at home to Thackley in a game that saw the away side relinquish the lead three times.

Maltby Main came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at home with Liversedge, Joseph Austin and Gavin King levelling matters after Oliver Fearon and Joseph Kenny had put Sedge in front.

And, it was 1-1 between Eccleshill United and Staveley Miners Welfare, Michael Burke with a 39th minute equaliser for Staveley after Nathan Woodward had given the Eagles the lead.

The early pacesetters in Division One are Dronfield Town and Brigg Town who both hit half-a-dozen in their opening matches.

Matthew Ord's hat-trick, added to by goals from Connor Chapell, Ashley Rawson and Ethan Flower, secured a 6-1 home win for Dronfield over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic whilst Brigg were 6-2 victors over visitors East Hull with a Stuart Longbone brace and one each from Jake Reed, Ryan Thompson, James Osborne and Jack Tierney for the returning Zebras.

Gareth Barlow, Matthew Allison and Adam Baskerville struck in the last half-hour to claim a 3-0 win at home for Winterton Rangers over Glasshoughton Welfare, and there were also winning starts for Nostell Miners Welfare, Swallownest, Parkgate and promoted Retford FC.

Nostell beat visitors Ollerton Town 4-2 with Danny Edwards completing the scoring for the hosts in injury time whilst Matthew Morton's 54th minute penalty proved to be the winner for Swallownest as they won 3-2 at relegated Hall Road Rangers.

And, there were single-goal victories for Retford FC at Rossington Main, Shay Evans-Booth with the strike, whilst Jonathan Fusco netted for Parkgate at Armthorpe Welfare.

Meanwhile, three matches ended in 1-1 draws, Andrew McCreadie's stoppage time equaliser earning Campion a point at relegated Harrogate Railway Athletic, Adam Bolder making sure of a point in North Ferriby's first NCEL match at home to Hallam, and Daniel Walker netting the leveller for Selby Town on 75 minutes at home to Skegness Town.
