NCEL 2010/11 Match Review #9
5th September, 2010
The FA Vase began this weekend for 23 KoolSport NCEL teams with thirteen of them booking their place in the Second Round of Qualifying in a fortnight's time.
Six of them were winners away from home with Scarborough Athletic posting the most comfortable scoreline.
Frank Belt's first-half opener, added to by a Ryan Blott penalty and a Bill Law strike late on, gave them a 3-0 victory at Seaham Red Star.
That keeps the Seadogs on track to a possible First Round clash with their landlords and NCEL rivals, Bridlington Town.
A double from Jamie Wasley helped Liversedge to a 4-2 victory at Darlington Railway Athletic with James Hurtley and Jarrod Peltier also finding the net.
Willis Francis' 15th-minute strike was enough to separate the sides as Arnold Town won 1-0 at Newark Town whilst Brighouse Town were 2-0 victors at NCEL rivals, Glasshoughton Welfare.
Worsbrough Bridge Athletic came from behind to win 2-1 at Cheadle Town as Paul McCormack's own goal on 57 minutes set them on their way and Adam Podmore struck the winner soon after.
Nathan Emson's goal on the hour saw Grimsby Borough claim a 1-0 victory at Radcliffe Olympic in a match that was reversed as Borough's pitch remains unavailable.
AFC Emley had a bittersweet time in their clash with Hemsworth Miners Welfare on Friday evening.
Mark Stuart was everywhere in their 4-2 victory, scoring the fourth to cap a fine display and cancel out his first-half own goal.
But, it was announced after the game that he was moving to Division One leaders, Eccleshill United.
Matt Thorpe also struck twice for the hosts and Callum Flanagan got his name on the scoresheet as well.
Eccleshill United won 2-1 at home to Gillford Park whilst goals from Michael Blythen and Mat Arnault saw Dinnington Town progress at the expense of Vodkat League side, Wigan Robin Park, 2-0.
Parkgate were 4-2 winners at home to Congleton Town whilst Sunderland RCA were dispatched by hosts Selby Town, 3-2.
It was a very straightforward afternoon for Tadcaster Albion who cantered to a 5-0 victory over visitors Prudoe Town and Winterton Rangers beat Long Eaton United 2-0 with goals from Jack Cross and Kirk Frost.
Maltby Main have a midweek trip to Wigan after they were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Ashton Town.
They twice led through Ashley Hunter and Greg Mason but the visitors would not lie down and forced the only replay to involve an NCEL side.
Nine of our teams saw their FA Vase run end at the first hurdle, six at the hands of sides from outside our League.
Hall Road Rangers had the worst possible first-half at Easington Colliery as they fell to a 5-0 deficit by the break.
They almost pulled off a miraculous recovery, though, with Craig Suddaby and James McGarry both scoring twice in the second period, but they could not get the fifth and bowed out.
Other sides that fell by the wayside were Nostell Miners Welfare, Shirebrook Town, Bottesford Town, Brodsworth Welfare and Long Eaton United.
Meanwhile, there was plenty going on in the League with Bridlington stretching their lead at the top of the Premier Division to three points.
Steve Lyon and Nick McNamara claimed a brace each for the defending champions as they won 4-2 at home to Pickering Town, Liam Salt also netting twice for the away side.
Second-placed Farsley AFC lost a little ground as they drew 2-2 at Armthorpe Welfare.
Craig Morley had the home side ahead on twenty minutes before Gareth Grant levelled soon after the interval and Mark Jackson gave the visitors the lead by the hour mark.
But, Craig Fletcher made sure honours were even when he struck for Welfare on 68 minutes.
Thackley moved up to fourth with a 4-1 home win over Lincoln Moorlands Railway.
Joel Ettiene, Andy King and Luke Hudson had them three-up by the break, Sean Cann pulled one back on 48 minutes but Matthew Mathers made sure of the victory late on.
Louth Town's hundred percent record in Division One came to an end as they missed out on a chance to go above Eccleshill United and to the top of the table.
A Ryan Damms penalty on 64 minutes and an injury-time second from Jamie Smith saw them beaten 2-0 at home by Staveley Miners Welfare, who move up into fifth.
Third-placed Pontefract Collieries closed the gap on the top duo to two points with a 5-0 win at bottom side Appleby Frodingham.
Only one goal separated the two sides by the hour mark, Nicky Handley's opener midway through the first period.
But, Carl Fothergill, Ryan Poskitt, Craig Stephens and Joshua Wright all struck in the final quarter of the game to make it a convincing victory.
A Danny Forrest hat-trick earned Yorkshire Amateur a 3-0 win at Rossington Main whilst Handsworth were 2-0 winners at home to Barton Town Old Boys.
And, Danny Keen's 43rd-minute strike was enough for Leeds Carnegie as they won 1-0 at home to Askern Villa.
