NCEL 2010/11 Match Review #8

1st September, 2010

Two of the pre-season favourites to lift the KoolSport NCEL Premier Division title head the table after comfortable 5-0 home wins on Bank Holiday Monday.

Defending champions Bridlington Town are at the summit with ten points from four games after they dispatched Long Eaton United at Queensgate.

They were four-up by the interval with Steve Lyon, Craig Hogg, Joe Danby and Craig Palmer all finding the net whilst Danby got his second and the Seasiders' fifth towards the end of the game.

A point behind them are Farsley AFC who beat visitors Dinnington Town by the same scoreline.

Simeon Bambrook netted a brace whilst Liam Cartledge's own goal, added to by strikes from Ben Jones and Scott Driscoll, made it a straightforward afternoon for the Throstle Nest outfit.

Also setting the early pace, perhaps not as expected but equally deserved, are Brighouse Town.

The newly-promoted side have had a great start to their first season in the Premier Division although they needed a dramatic comeback at Nostell Miners Welfare to move up into third position.

Darren Rushton had given the home side a very early lead and that is how it stayed until the final five minutes of the match.

Nathan Cartman levelled before Brighouse were awarded a penalty in injury time that was coolly converted by Nicky Boshell.

A Liam Wilkin brace at the start of the second half moved Winterton Rangers up into fifth place, climbing above Selby Town who they beat 2-0 at West Street.

Pickering Town did not let the departure of their manager Mark Wood at the weekend affect them as they won 3-0 at Armthorpe Welfare.

Liam Salt and Lyle Hillier scored either side of the interval before Josh Greening made sure of the victory late on.

Division One champions Tadcaster Albion picked up their first Premier Division win, 4-1 at home to Hall Road Rangers, as a Matthew Howgate double in the last twelve minutes sealed the three points.

Thackley were 2-0 winners at home to Maltby Main whilst Liversedge came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at home to Arnold Town.

The biggest crowd of the afternoon was in Division One at the Euronics Ground as 320 people watched the return of legend Dean Windass to the NCEL after almost twenty years.

He began his footballing life at North Ferriby United before moving on to Hull City in 1991 and embarking on a remarkable League career.

And, his one-off comeback for Barton Town Old Boys proved very successful as he scored a hat-trick, including one from the penalty spot, in their 3-1 home win over Yorkshire Amateur.

The victory moved the Swans up into third behind leaders Eccleshill United and Louth Town who both won 3-1.

Two goals from Marcus Edwards and a third from Andy Howland saw Eccleshill pick up their fifth victory in six games at home to Rossington Main.

And, Louth Town came from behind at Teversal to maintain their hundred percent record.

Greg Tobin had broken the deadlock for the hosts on twelve minutes before second-half goals from Tim Lowe, Kurt Crossley and a Sam Smith penalty kept the momentum going for the White Wolves.

Worsbrough Bridge Athletic were 2-1 winners at Pontefract Collieries, thanks to a brace from Liam McFadyen whilst Glasshoughton Welfare beat Staveley Miners Welfare 2-0 at Leeds Road.

And, Shirebrook Town climbed to twelfth with a 2-1 home victory over Grimsby Borough.

Finally, Tuesday night saw disappointment in the only FA Cup Preliminary Round Replay as Hemsworth Miners Welfare were beaten 4-1 at Evo-Stik League side, Bamber Bridge.
