12th August, 2010
Two KoolSport NCEL Division One sides provided upsets in midweek by beating Premier Division opposition in the first round of the President?s Cup.
Seven of the eight ties took place with Leeds Carnegie and Hemsworth Miners Welfare proving to be the giant-killers.
Leeds were 3-1 winners at Armthorpe Welfare with first half goals by Marco Marchetta and Gary Challenor added to by Liam Smith in the opening minute of the second period.
Darren Mansaram then got a consolation for the hosts just after the hour mark.
An Andy Park own goal after six minutes was enough for Hemsworth as they beat visitors Pickering Town by a single goal.
Barton Town Old Boys came close to being the third Division One side to triumph against a top flight team as they took hosts Tadcaster Albion to penalties.
There were no goals during 120 minutes of play before Tadcaster won 4-2 in the shoot-out.
Pontefract Collieries were undone by three goals in five minutes at home to Bridlington Town
They had taken the lead on thirteen minutes through Jason Bentley but, as the game went into its final quarter, the Seasiders levelled through Craig Hogg, Tom Fleming put them ahead and Hogg scored his second to make sure of the victory.
Staveley Miners Welfare were beaten 2-1 at Thackley, Luke Hudson's 75th minute strike proving to be the winner for the hosts.
The two all-Premier Division ties proved to be dramatic affairs with Farsley AFC edging through 3-2 at home to Brighouse Town.
After a goalless opening half, Ben Jones and Gareth Grant had the home side two-up by 65 minutes before a Danny Toronczak brace quickly had Brighouse back level.
Then, as the game looked to be going into extra time, Grant popped up for his second of the evening to send Farsley through.
Craig Palmer struck five minutes from time to seal a 2-1 win for Scarborough Athletic at Arnold Town.
The Seadogs had gone behind to a first half goal from Tony Law before Frank Belt levelled on 59 minutes.
The remaining President's Cup First Round tie, AFC Emley versus Winterton Rangers, takes place in September.
And, Handsworth's life in the NCEL got off to a very impressive start as they won 4-0 in their Division One clash at home to Glasshoughton Welfare.
They were three-up by the break thanks to two from Russell Hobson - one from the penalty spot - and a third from Lee Brunt.
In front of a crowd of 185, Ryan Johnson completed the scoring with a quarter-of-an-hour to go.
