Brier Relishing Move Upstairs

1st June, 2007

Mark Brier has had a meteoric rise at Liversedge and has now been confirmed as the chairman in changes to the club's hierarchy over the close season.

Long-serving chairman Bob Gawthorpe made his decision to stand down almost a year ago and has used the season just gone to pass on his memories via the pages of the match-day programme.

Brier, who was brought to the club by former manager Eugene Lacy as a junior coach and money raiser, has now stepped up.

He did have a short spell in charge of the first team when Lacy quit mid-season and he retains his role as commercial manager as he looks forward to becoming the club's figurehead.

"It has been a really busy time for me, and the club, but everything will be in place for the coming season and I know I'm very much looking forward to it," said Brier.

"My only disappointment is that I ran the under-19s and, with me being kicked upstairs so to speak, that is one role I will have to give up.

"I enjoyed the work with the youth team and hope I had a good record.

"But there are huge changes at this club now and we are all very excited by it. People like Bob have done a wonderful job over the years.

"That era is gone now and, since we merged with Gomersal and Cleckheaton, we have all moved forward."

One benefit of that has been the standard of catering at the ground.

"The committee has doubled in size and the match-day catering is real quality now. It has been mentioned by visiting teams that our catering is one of the best in our league.

"The NCE Premier Division has a high standard but it shows how much things are moving that we are getting these comments now."
