Bruce In Rescue Mission

16th April, 2007

Liverpool legend Bruce Grobbelaar insists his debut for cash-strapped Glasshoughton Welfare is no stunt.

The 1984 European Cup winner turned back the clock as the NCEL side beat Maltby Main 2-1 on Saturday.

And, while 50-year-old Grobbelaar - who lives in nearby Wakefield - isn't planning to come out of retirement permanently, he plans to stick around and ensure there is football at the Castleford club for years to come.

"I only signed for one game but we will be talking in the near future about me playing a role next year," he told The Non-League Paper. "I will definitely stay in touch with the club even if I'm not playing.

"I'm very interested in working with the youth team but Glasshoughton need a first team and need them to be good.

"There is no point in having a youth team if the players have nowhere to aspire to."

Grobbelaar was convinced to don his gloves by committee members Gary Booth, Lee Beardshaw and Paul Downes.

And, the former Zimbabwe international - who was four minutes away from keeping a clean sheet - was quick to reveal his passion for the grassroots game.

"I was told the club might have to fold due to lack of funds," he explained. "I hate seeing it happen to any club, so I asked what I could do.

"I was given three dates and this was the one I was free on - so here I am."
