Welfare Sign Goalkeeping Legend

20th March, 2007

Former Liverpool goalkeeping star Bruce Grobbelaar has signed for Glasshoughton Welfare.

He will make his debut on Saturday the 14th of April in the home Premier Division clash with Maltby Main at the Glasshoughton Centre.

The news shows there may still be hope for the club who are experiencing financial difficulties and a lack of helpers which has threatened their very existence beyond this season.

At present it is understood that there may well be hope for the future at the hands of a new committee, the first initiative of which is the signing of Bruce Grobbelaar.

Gary Booth, who has been involved helping trying to secure a future for the club, said: "It is fair to say that, following our recent press appeals, people have come forward and discussions with interested parties are on-going."

Despite this encouraging news, though, he went on to add a note of caution: "We are not out of the woods yet.

"There is still a long way to go, with nothing finalised, therefore I am not at liberty at this stage to identify any individuals or details of on-going discussions.

"Hopefully, in the coming weeks, we can announce the continuation of Glasshoughton Welfare, with this major coup playing a major part in that survival."

He hopes that the local and business community will get behind Welfare to ensure their longer term future.

"If someone of the stature of Bruce Grobbelaar can recognise the role this club plays in the community by freely giving his time to help with our survival then we hope that local businesses can do their bit by providing some sponsorship to this event.

"Coverage will be unprecedented for this club with Sky Sports, BBC, YTV and local press and radio all covering the event."

It was also announced that Bruce will be doing 'An Audience With' at the Glasshoughton Centre on Sunday 22 April.

Information on these events, ticket information, sponsorship or offers of help can be obtained from Paul Downes at the club on 01977 511234 or Gary Booth on 07917 694991.

The news coming out of the Welfare Ground would appear to be more encouraging than a month or so ago, even if the identity of any new potential key personnel in the club are still a mystery.
