Carlton's Finances Are Key Says Chairman

12th March, 2007

Carlton Town chairman Mick Garton has revealed to the club's website that he is determined to match the managers' and players' efforts on the pitch with the same progress off it.

He said: "My challenge has always been to ensure the infrastructure off the field progresses at the same rate as progress on the field and, to be fair, I'm proud of my time at the helm here and I think that I have been able to achieve that goal to date.

"However, the potential of Unibond football in the future throws up a whole host of new challenges.

"Ensuring that ground grading status can be achieved is obviously the first hurdle and the new dressing rooms, hospitality facilities, office, tea bar and stand that are currently being built will go along way towards achieving that.

"There are also one or two other issues regarding the enclosed area etc. which I am currently dealing with and attempting to resolve.

"The biggest problem facing Carlton Town is our small crowds.

"Yes, we have come on a million miles since my first days at the club when we played in front of 3 men and a dog but, in comparison with other clubs at this level, our attendances are very small.

"That's why I put in place a corporate set-up headed by myself and ably assisted by Martin Bell and, with our contacts, we have been able to achieve support for a whole range of fund raising activities.

"For us to continue to move forward and remain competitive, the commercial arm of this club will be at the forefront of my thoughts.

"The five-a-side league, tournament days, five-a-side pitch lets, speakers evenings, sponsored games, high profile pre-season friendlies, race nights, golf days and advertising boards will all have to be put on, worked on and supported to back up funding provided by myself and our major sponsors.

"Keeping up is hard, given the excellent progress by our Coaching staff headed by the excellent Tommy Brookbanks who has won 2 Championships in my 5 years at the helm of my home town club.

"I would also like to place on the record my thanks to B & K who are building the new changing rooms, for their donation back to the club in terms of the original price and the payment terms they have given us, enabling the club to pay for the new facilities over a prolonged but realistic period of time.

"Without that gesture, we would really have been struggling," concluded the Chairman.
