D-Day For Troubled Staveley

19th April, 2007

The future looks uncertain for Staveley Miners Welfare following news that their entire committee is to step down.

They will do so after Saturday's final game of the season at Hall Road Rangers.

That could well be the team's last ever fixture unless the Miners Welfare, the club's owners, come up with a rescue package.

Press Officer Stephen Durcan stressed that the club was not in financial dificulties but that the mass resignation was brought about by members who could "no longer commit themselves to the club through one reason or another."

Mr Durcan, a non-committee member who is also the Programme Editor, was confident that it was not the end of the road for the club which was formed in 1989.

He added: "The main Welfare committee will meet within the next couple of weeks to discuss the situation and, providing there is enough interest generated, there is no reason why we cannot continue.

"It's been a tremendous season on the pitch but this news has totally overshadowed that.

"There's a lot of talking to be done over the coming weeks to determine whether Staveley MWFC are to be a part of the NCEL next season."
