NCEL Weekend Review
1st April, 2007
Sheffield's lead at the top of the Premier Division has been cut to seven points after they were held to a goalless draw at home on Saturday.
They could not break down a resolute Sutton Town who went down to ten men early in the second half with the dismissal of player-manager Jason Blunt.
Second-placed Retford United took full advantage as they claimed all three points in a 2-0 home win over Long Eaton United to move closer to the leaders with four games in hand.
Garforth Town keep hold of third position after a 2-0 win at Maltby Main as first-half goals from Duncan Williams and Bret Renshaw earned them maximum points.
But, Carlton Town and Selby Town are keeping firmly on their tail in the quest for a top three finish as both picked up victories.
Carlton Town were 3-0 home winners over Armthorpe Welfare whilst Selby Town?s renaissance continued with a 6-0 win at Eccleshill United.
A Mike Staley strike, an own goal from Danny Ferrand and an Andy Hart penalty had the Robins three-up by the interval before Graham Whitehead, Steve Lyon and Neil Towler wrapped things up within eight minutes of the restart.
Glapwell stay seventh behind Maltby after they were beaten 2-0 away at Arnold Town, Lee Sutton and Nick Hall with the goals for the Eagles.
Brodworth Welfare have officially been given the wooden spoon after a 7-0 thrashing at side just above them, Thackley.
An Andy Howland hat-trick, a brace from Dean Walters and one each from Nicky Matthews and Deroy White saw Welfare confirmed as this season's bottom Premier Division side.
Shirebrook Town, who are in eighteenth, were beaten 2-1 at home to Mickleover Sports despite taking the lead in the first-half through Curtis Shaw.
Dave Middleditch and Channon North scored in the second period to take the points for the visitors.
Shirebrook are now seven points behind fourth-from-bottom Glasshoughton Welfare who, thanks to goals from Nigel Croad and Gary Shelton, won 2-1 at Hallam.
And, Pickering Town move up to eleventh after Steve Baxter?s 78th-minute strike earned them a single-goal win at home to Liversedge.
The Division One title chase, meanwhile, has swung in Parkgate?s favour.
An Adam Fretwell penalty fourteen minutes from time saw them claim a 2-1 win over visitors Dinnington Town after Michael Blyton had cancelled out Richard Haigh?s early opener for the hosts.
Second-placed Winterton Rangers, meanwhile, went down 2-1 at home to Nostell Miners Welfare, Darren Rushton grabbing both goals for the visitors before Greg Archer pulled one back.
Parkgate now lead by five points but both sides still have five games to play.
South Normanton Athletic remain favourites to claim third after a 7-0 away win at Yorkshire Amateur kept them firmly in that position.
Kevin Mabon opened the scoring after just four minutes before Jerod Holmes and Adam Newton gave them a 3-0 lead by the break.
Holmes added his second and James Parkinson grabbed a fifth on 65 minutes before Mabon completed his hat-trick to complete the rout.
Lincoln Moorlands remain fifth behind Nostell after a 1-0 win at Pontefract Collieries, Scott Coupland with the goal on 78 minutes whilst Tadcaster Albion stay sixth following a 2-2 home draw with Worsbrough Bridge.
Rossington Main are now eight points adrift at the foot of Division One after a 1-1 draw at home to Hall Road Rangers whilst Borrowash Victoria claimed the same scoreline at Gedling Town.
And, Staveley Miners Welfare moved up to seventh with a 2-1 win at Teversal.
