NCEL Midweek Review
9th March, 2007
Retford United won the battle of the top two to make it through to the final of the Presidents Cup.
The Badgers beat hosts Sheffield 4-0 with all the goals coming in the second half.
Ryan Ford and Lee Holmes grabbed one each whilst there was a brace from Ben Chambers.
Retford now meet either Parkgate or Selby Town in a two-legged final.
There were three matches in the Premier Division in midweek with the biggest victory being claimed by Garforth Town.
They travelled to Eccleshill United and won 7-1 to tighten their hold on third place.
Bret Renshaw claimed a hat-trick and there were two goals for Duncan Williams whilst Jason St Juste and Richard Carrick also got on the scoresheet for Simon Clifford's side.
Gareth Hamlet got the consolation for Eccleshill who remain fourteenth.
Armthorpe Welfare moved into the top ten with a single goal victory over Maltby Main.
Adam Lee's 27th-minute strike made it four wins out of their last five matches, a run that has seen them surge up the table.
Just above them in eighth place is Selby Town who claimed a 2-1 win at Shirebrook Town on Wednesday.
Gary Jones and Neil Towler put them two-up at the start of the second period before Lance Mulligan scored from the penalty spot for Shirebrook with eleven minutes remaining.
Winterton Rangers have cut Parkgate's lead at the top to four points with a 2-0 win at Yorkshire Amateur.
Danny Clarke converted a spot-kick on 41 minutes and Steve Ward doubled their advantage after the interval.
Worsbrough Bridge and Pontefract Collieries both moved up the table as they shared the points in a 2-2 draw.
Dean Shirt grabbed a last-minute equaliser after a Chris Shaw penalty and John Forrest strike had seemingly claimed the victory for Ponte.
Pontefract are now seventh whilst Worsbrough are eighth.
And, Teversal have climbed to fifteenth after a goalless draw at home to Borrowash Victoria.
Elsewhere, three clubs progressed in various County Cups during midweek.
Arnold Town went through in their Notts Senior Cup Quarter-Final at fellow NCEL side Carlton Town, 2-0, with goals from Ricky Law and Chris Freestone.
They are joined in the last four by Gedling Town as Matthew Turner's strike saw them win by a single goal at home to Nottinghamshire Senior League side, Wollaton.
And, at the same stage of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup in another all-NCEL clash, Division One leaders Parkgate upset Premier Division side Hallam at Sandygate.
Caine Cheetham grabbed the winner in the dying seconds as the game looked to be going into extra-time.
But, despite a Liam Cartledge goal, Dinnington Town are out of the competition after being beaten 2-1 by Sheffield & Hallamshire County League side Mexborough Main Street.
And, Glapwell are out of the Derbyshire Senior Cup but put up a brave performance in their 3-2 Semi-Final defeat at home to UniBond outfit Ilkeston Town.
The game went into extra-time after a Dougie Wade penalty had cancelled out an early opener for Glapwell from Ian Brown.
Les McJannet's side then had to play the extra thirty minutes with ten men following an injury to Aaron Shelley.
Matt Daly and Martin Carruthers ensured that Ilkeston took advantage before Craig Housley pulled one back for the hosts.
