NCEL Weekend Review
26th February, 2007
A second-half strike by David Wilkins was enough to see Sheffield extend their lead at the top of the Premier Division to ten points.
It proved to be the only goal in their tight victory over visitors Pickering Town, who stay thirteenth despite the defeat.
The gap between Sheffield and the rest grew as the game of the day between their two closest rivals at the start of play, Retford United and Garforth Town, was called off due to a waterlogged pitch at Cannon Park.
Maltby Main were another team to take advantage as they replaced Garforth in third with a 1-1 draw at Eccleshill United.
Main had fallen behind through a Luke Hudson penalty on 65 minutes but Gary Eades grabbed the equaliser soon after to share the points.
The only other move in the top seven saw Carlton Town leapfrog over Glapwell whose game at Selby Town was called off.
Carlton were 1-0 winners at Long Eaton United with Michael Martin?s 52nd minute strike proving to be enough to separate the sides.
A late late show by Hallam saw them move up to eighth with a 4-1 victory at Shirebrook Town.
Billy Rowley had put the Yorkshire side ahead in the fifth minute before Ady Francis levelled matters early in the second half.
And, that is how it stayed until the final twenty minutes when Shirebrook had Lance Mulligan sent off and Hallam took full advantage with goals from John Drennan, Scott Bates and Christopher Coy.
Shirebrook remain in nineteenth place, five points ahead of bottom side Brodsworth Welfare who picked up a point in a 1-1 draw at home to Liversedge.
Welfare had gone into the break at half-time a goal ahead through Mike Richardson but Ryan Buckley restored parity on the hour mark.
Meanwhile, Sutton Town moved up to ninth with a 2-1 home win over Glasshoughton Welfare.
Both the Snipes goals came in the first half as Richard Britten put through his own net and Carl Westcarr added the second.
Shaun Banham reduced the deficit for Glasshoughton with ten minutes to go but Sutton held on to give caretaker boss Jason Blunt a victory in his first league game in charge.
The other movers in the Premier Division were Armthorpe Welfare who won a thrilling encounter against visitors Mickleover Sports.
Christian Moore scored early on for Sports and that is how it stayed until the first minute of the second half when Adam Lee equalised.
Welfare then moved 3-1 ahead with twenty minutes remaining thanks to a brace from Liam Muirhead with one from the penalty spot.
David Holmes pulled one back for Mickleover before Armthorpe?s Luke Townsend and Stuart Preston put the game beyond doubt.
Moore got his second and Sports? third in injury time but it was only a consolation as Armthorpe won 5-3.
Finally in the top flight, Thackley drew 1-1 at home to Arnold Town to keep both sides in eighteenth and sixteenth, respectively.
Chris Freestone nabbed a late goal for Arnold after Andy Howland had put the hosts ahead on 18 minutes.
In Division One, only two games survived the bad weather but they more than made up for it as they provided fourteen goals.
Most of them came in Staveley Miners Welfare?s 7-2 win at home to AFC Emley.
A first-half 21-minute hat-trick from Marc Scott saw them take control of the game before Allan Laud got Emley off the mark from the penalty spot.
However, Scott added his fourth just before the interval to give them an unassailable 4-1 interval lead.
The final four goals came in the last eleven minutes of the second period as Liam O?Brien and two from Anthony Shaw completed the rout for Staveley whilst Adam Day also found the net for the visitors.
Staveley move up to tenth, one position behind Pontefract Collieries who came from behind to win 3-2 at Yorkshire Amateur.
The Ammers were two-up after twenty-five minutes but two from Kevin Duckworth and a late winner from John Forrest turned the match on its head.
