NCEL Weekend Review
18th February, 2007
Retford United have bowed out of the FA Vase at the Fifth Round stage after being beaten 5-1 at Leamington.
The Midland Alliance leaders produced an awesome second-half display in front of a crowd of almost 1400 to put the tie beyond the Badgers' reach by the 72nd minute.
Ben Mackey had the hosts ahead on the half-hour mark before four goals in just over twenty minutes after the interval ended the game as a contest.
Mackey grabbed his second, David Pearson added a brace and Jon Adams also got on the scoresheet before Adam Kerley claimed a late consolation for Retford.
It was a sad end to the Cannon Park side's FA Vase adventure but they must take great pride in getting to the last sixteen of the competition.
Meanwhile, in the Premier Division, Sheffield extended their lead over Retford at the top of the table to seven points with a 2-0 victory at Arnold Town.
Vill Powell scored on 23 minutes and David Wilkins doubled their advantage after the interval.
Garforth Town and Maltby Main took advantage of dropped points by Mickleover Sports to move up the table into the top four.
Sports drop to fifth after a 2-2 draw at home to Long Eaton United and have been replaced in third by a Garforth side who extended their unbeaten run to six matches with a 2-1 victory over visitors Armthorpe Welfare.
Dan Sheriffe put Simon Clifford's team ahead towards the end of the first half before Adam Lee levelled matters on 70 minutes for Welfare.
But, Bret Renshaw's strike twelve minutes from time meant all three points were staying at the Genix Healthcare Stadium.
Main are fourth after a 4-2 win at home to Thackley thanks to a blistering first half-hour performance from them.
Liam Kay, Scott Somerville and Paul Turner had put them three-up but, in the second period, a Dean Walters brace brought Thackley back into the game.
However, a Somerville penalty on 69 minutes secured the victory for Sean Kay's side.
Carlton Town have moved up one place to sixth after a Daniel Blair hat-trick saw them claim a 3-2 victory over Eccleshill United at the Bill Stokeld Stadium.
Darren Fletcher and Andy Philp netted for the Eagles in what was a dramatic game.
Glapwell, who were without a game, drop to seventh with local rivals Sutton Town now just one place behind them after their win at Hallam.
Lee Wilson's side had to wait though until the last quarter-of-an-hour to get the three points.
Carl Westcarr opened the scoring on 76 minutes and Richard Smith made sure of the win soon after.
Bottom side Brodsworth Welfare's nightmare season continued with a heavy 4-0 defeat at Glasshoughton Welfare.
Jermaine Moyce grabbed two of the goals whilst Richard Britten and Stephen Downes added to Broddy's misery.
The victory means that Glasshoughton have stretched the game between themselves in seventeenth and the bottom three to eight points.
Shirebrook Town remain in nineteenth after a 2-1 loss at Pickering Town.
Ricky Greening and Steve Baxter put the Pikes two-up in the second half before Joe Naylor pulled one back for the Derbyshire side as the game went into stoppage time.
Liversedge and Selby Town, meanwhile, shared the points in a 2-2 draw with John Flynn netting a last-minute equaliser for Sedge.
Meanwhile, there was no movement whatsoever in the Division One table despite a day of high drama.
Parkgate and Winterton Rangers, continued their seemingly unstoppable charge towards claiming the top two spots at the end of the season.
Paul Clayton grabbed two and Caine Cheetham found the net for Parkgate as they won 3-1 at home to Hall Road Rangers to keep a twelve-point gap between themselves and their nearest rival.
But, Rangers, who have three games in hand on the leaders, show no signs of giving up their quest for the title as a third minute Andy Holt goal and an injury time strike from Steve Ward saw them 2-0 victors over visitors Gedling Town.
Fourth-placed South Normanton Athletic lost some ground as they were beaten 3-2 at Dinnington Town.
The match was level at half-time after Joe Atkinson's 30th minute penalty for South Normanton cancelled out an Ant Lynam goal just moments earlier.
And, Athletic then went ahead through Nick Thorpe on 55 minutes before Rob Ward struck twice to give Dinno a victory that keeps them in seventh place.
Lincoln Moorlands could not capitalise and stay fifth as they drew 2-2 at AFC Emley.
Nathan Hazledean grabbed a point for the hosts late on after Rick Ranshaw and Paul Hodds had seemingly got Moorlands the win.
The most dramatic game, meanwhile, came at Park Road where Worsbrough Bridge came out 4-2 winners over visitors Staveley Miners Welfare - with five of the goals coming in the last eight minutes.
Bridge were ahead through a Richard Adams goal in first-half injury time before a remarkable run of events had supporters from both sides very nervous indeed.
Glenn Walton doubled the hosts' advantage on 82 minutes before Anthony Shaw pulled one back for Staveley three minutes later.
Almost immediately, Matt Neesam made it 3-1 before Staveley halved the deficit once more through a Danny Bainbridge penalty on 88 minutes.
But, once again, the one goal difference lasted less than 60 seconds as Matt Slater ended the scoring and the points went Bridge's way.
In the other two Division One games that were played, a Richard Coupe own goal saw bottom side Rossington Main claim only their third win of the season at Pontefract Collieries.
And, Tadcaster Albion were held to a 3-3 draw by visitors Borrowash Victoria.
Teversal's home game with Yorkshire Amateur, meanwhile, was called off less than an hour before kick-off due to what the referee had deemed to be an unfit pitch.
