NCEL Weekend Review

10th February, 2007

Only one game survived the snowy conditions and it produced an upset as Armthorpe Welfare climbed out of the bottom five of the Premier Division.

They beat sixth-placed Glapwell 5-1 at the Welfare Ground in a game that saw the visitors finish with only nine men on the pitch.

Things looked set to go to form when Ian Brown put Glapwell ahead after six minutes.

But, Armthorpe came back into the game and levelled soon after from Adam Lee.

Nathan Iley then put the hosts ahead before Glapwell keeper Neil West was sent off on 44 minutes.

Things then got worse after the hour mark for the Hall Corner side as Richard Smith was also given his marching orders and Stuart Preston doubled Welfare's advantage.

Darren Erskine added a fourth on 69 minutes before Iley completed the rout from the penalty spot with nine minutes remaining.

The victory continued Armthorpe's recent improvement in form making it four wins out of their last six matches.

For Glapwell, it is a second defeat in a row that has meant their promotion aspirations have hit a stutter.

But, they still have games in hand on four of the five sides above them in the table.
