NCEL Weekend Review
21st January, 2007
There were mixed fortunes for the NCEL's two remaining sides in the FA Vase with one making it through to the last sixteen whilst the other bowed out despite a fine performance.
Retford United are the League's sole representative now in the competition after a superb 5-2 win at North West Counties rivals, Flixton.
The Badgers started off at a lightning pace and were three-up by the half-hour mark with two goals from Oliver Chappell and a third from Mick Godber.
Patrick McFaddon pulled one back for the hosts on 64 minutes before Ben Chambers restored the three-goal lead with ten minutes remaining.
Scott Warner added a second for Flixton in the dying minutes before Retford missed a penalty and then grabbed the fifth in injury-time, courtesy of Mark Ashton.
They go into Monday's Fifth Round draw but, unfortunately, they will not be joined by Glasshoughton Welfare.
Glasshoughton had made the long trip to Wessex League side Wimborne Town and, like Retford, began brilliantly but, unlike their NCEL counterparts, they did not take their chances to make it comfortable.
Luke Sherman had put Welfare up within 12 minutes and that was the only goal of the first half despite the visitors having chances to make it 3-0 by the break.
And, Wimborne took advantage by equalising and taking the lead as the game went into the last quarter-of-an-hour in normal time.
Scott Arnold and Chris Kennedy got their goals before Welfare levelled through Paul Stevenson on 81 minutes to take the tie into extra-time.
But, they would have to play the thirty minutes a man light after keeper Carl Codd was given a second yellow card.
Wimborne made them pay as Kennedy grabbed his second and the hosts' third towards the end of the first period of extra time and Stuart Cannie made it 4-2 just before the end of the second.
In the League, only three Premier Division games survived the bad weather.
Maltby Main moved up into second with a 3-0 home win over Brodsworth Welfare with Scott Somerville, playing his first game since November because of injury, grabbing two of those goals, one from the penalty spot.
Gary Eades claimed the third in injury time to move them within eleven points of leaders Sheffield.
For Brodsworth, the defeat dumped them at the bottom of the table as the side previously there, Shirebrook Town, enjoyed a 3-0 victory at Long Eaton United.
Valadmir Santos Farrell and an Adam Holmes own goal had them two-up by the break before Johnny Cullen made sure in the final moments of the encounter.
It was Shirebrook's first away win of the season and their first victory in the league since the end of September.
And, Hallam's poor run of form continued with a 4-1 home defeat to Armthorpe Welfare and, although they remain eighth, they have now conceded seventeen in their last four league matches.
Welfare, who had a brace from Nathan Iley amongst their goals, remain in seventeenth but it will be a morale-boosting win for them.
There was considerably more action in Division One with six games taking place and Parkgate tightening their grip at the top.
A 3-1 win at Lincoln Moorlands with two goals from Lee Squires and a third from Matt Outram saw them stretch their lead to eight points.
Moorlands, who got a late consolation from Ross Fleming, stay fifth.
Winterton Rangers moved up into second, replacing South Normanton Athletic whose game at fellow high-flyers Nostell Miners Welfare was called off.
They won 3-1 at home to Teversal after the visitors had taken the lead through Richie Walker.
A goal on the stroke of half-time from Matthew Plant brought them back level and, in the second half, Mark Whitehouse and a Rob Northen penalty added to their tally.
The only other movement in the table saw Dinnington Town move up to tenth and AFC Emley up to twelfth.
Dinnington were 2-0 victors at home to bottom side Rossington Main with both goals scored in the first half by Ant Lynam.
And, AFC Emley claimed a 2-1 win over visitors Gedling Town who had taken the lead early on through Adam Baum.
But, an Allan Laud penalty on 36 minutes and a Paul Quinn strike halfway through the second period saw the hosts claim the three points.
They go above Hall Road Rangers who were beaten by a 40th-minute Ben Kistell goal at Staveley Miners Welfare.
Staveley remain ninth, one place behind Tadcaster Albion who picked up a 2-1 home win over Pontefract Collieries.
