NCEL Midweek Preview

15th January, 2007

Retford United become the latest Premier Division side to try and keep the title chase open as they go to leaders Sheffield in the pick of the midweek action.

The Badgers, who are third, are thirteen points behind their hosts but have four games in hand and know that victory would keep them in with a good shout of overthrowing Dave McCarthy?s side at the helm.

An outcome is difficult to predict as both sides will be determined to maintain unbeaten runs in the league since the middle of September.

That is one of the three Premier Division clashes that take place on Tuesday night, with the other two focussing on the bottom half of the table.

Sutton Town would move into the top ten with victory at home to next-to-bottom Brodsworth Welfare whilst the two sides above Broddy, Thackley and Armthorpe Welfare, meet at Dennyfield.

There are also three Division One matches on Tuesday.

South Normanton Athletic, will be looking to cut the gap between themselves and the only side above them in the table, Parkgate, to three points.

They are at home to Yorkshire Amateur who, despite being sixteenth, have enjoyed a recent upturn of form.

There is a sixth-versus-eighth clash at Park Road as Worsbrough Bridge entertain Tadcaster Albion whilst Gedling Town travel, the side in-between those two teams, travel to Borrowash Victoria.

Meanwhile, there is plenty of Third Round action in the League Cup with seven of the eight matches being played.

The tie of the round is one of six that kick-off on Tuesday evening where Mickleover Sports travel to another high-flying Premier Division side, Carlton Town.

The only all-other top-flight clash is a tasty local derby as Pickering Town host Selby Town.

Four Division One teams will be looking to cause upsets as they go to Premier Division opposition.

Staveley Miners Welfare are at Eccleshill United, Lincoln Moorlands go to Garforth Town and Parkgate travel to Long Eaton United.

Then, on Wednesday, it is Hallam who will be looking to avoid an upset as they host Hall Road Rangers.

And finally, also on Wednesday, there is another attempt to play the Derbyshire Senior Cup Quarter-Final between Glapwell and Lincolnshire Senior leaders Stapenhill at Hall Corner.
