NCEL Weekend Preview

22nd December, 2006

Weather permitting, there are seventeen matches in the Northern Counties East Football League this Saturday.

Top faces bottom in the Premier Division with leaders Sheffield at home to struggling Shirebrook Town.

The hosts, who are eight points clear of the three teams below them, are favourites to take the tie.

But, the Derbyshire side need to start picking up wins away from home to close the three point gap between themselves and Brodsworth Victoria who are at Eccleshill United.

Of the trio closest to Sheffield on 31 points, fourth-placed Maltby Main are not in action whilst Retford United are away to seventh-placed Carlton Town and Hallam host mid-table Liversedge.

Selby Town, in fifth, could go second if things go their way with a victory at Long Eaton United and the side just below the Robins, Mickleover Sports, host Glasshoughton Welfare.

Glapwell make the long trip up to Pickering Town knowing a win could move them into the top five whilst Arnold Town hope to keep up their unbeaten home record as they host Garforth Town.

And, Sutton Town travel to Thackley in the last of the Premier Division matches.

It is first against second, meanwhile, in a massive match in Division One as leaders Parkgate host the side that would go above them with a victory, Winterton Rangers.

The visitors are the only unbeaten side in the Northern Counties East League and will be keen to extend that excellent run at Green Lane.

Hoping to pounce on dropped points by either team are Nostell Miners Welfare who are in third spot and at home to the bottom side Rossington Main.

Lincoln Moorlands, in fifth, would close the gap on the top four who had threatened to run away from the rest with victory over visitors Gedling Town who would leapfrog over Moorlands should they get the points.

Staveley Miners Welfare are at home to Yorkshire Amateur whilst Hall Road Rangers entertain Borrowash Victoria in games that could make a difference at either end of the table.

Ninth-placed Worsbrough Bridge host the side one spot below them, Pontefract Collieries, whilst Teversal go to AFC Emley and Tadcaster Albion are at Dinnington Town in the remaining two games.
