NCEL Weekend Preview

10th November, 2006

There are four chances of a giant-killing act on Second Round day of the NCEL League Cup, traditionally played on the second Saturday in November.

Out of the sixteen matches taking place, a quarter of them see Division One sides hoping to cause an upset against their Premier Division rivals.

Three of the ties see the lower-ranked team at home as Nostell Miners Welfare take on last year's beaten finalists Sheffield, Staveley Miners Welfare host Glasshoughton Welfare and there is a local derby at Carnarvon Street as Teversal entertain Glapwell.

The other game sees mid-table Division One side Pontefract Collieries travel to league leaders Maltby Main.

Of the remaining twelve games, eight are all-Premier Division clashes.

Last year's trophy winners Liversedge start their defence at home to Long Eaton United whilst Arnold Town host Mickleover Sports, Garforth Town take on Sutton Town in an intriguing encounter and Armthorpe Welfare travel to Selby Town.

For the bottom sides, it gives them a chance to get away from their league problems as basement outfit Shirebrook Town entertain Eccleshill United at Langwith Road.

The side just above them, Brodsworth Welfare, are also at home as they take on Hallam whilst eighteenth-placed Thackley travel to Carlton Town.

The final all-Prem tie sees Pickering Town up against Retford United in a top-six clash at Mill Lane.

Division One leaders Winterton Rangers are at home to Yorkshire Amateur in one of four ties that involves clubs just from that division.

Parkgate go to Dinnington Town, Hall Road Rangers host Worsbrough Bridge and Tadcaster Albion entertain Lincoln Moorlands.

There are two games in Division One for sides knocked out at the First Round stage of the League Cup.

South Normanton Athletic know a win at home against Rossington Main will move them into the top five of the table.

But, Rossington who are next to bottom will be going all out for the points whilst keeping an eye on events in the other match.

The team below them, AFC Emley, go to fourteenth-placed Borrowash Victoria in a clash between two sides really struggling to get any sort of league form going.
