NCEL Match Review #72
5th May, 2009
Long Eaton United lifted the KoolSport NCEL League Cup trophy and claimed second place in the Premier Division in the final round of matches over the Bank Holiday weekend.
Firstly, they won 4-0 at home to Hall Road Rangers on Saturday to finish runners-up, seven points behind League champions Mickleover Sports.
Alex Steadman gave them a first-half lead before Paul Gamble doubled their advantage after the break and then Nathan Parker and Steadman made sure of the victory in the last ten minutes.
And then, on Monday, they won the League Cup by beating the team they leapfrogged over in the Premier Division two days earlier.
They came up against Selby Town at Staveley Miners Welfare's Inkersall Road ground where they picked up a deserved 3-0 victory.
Nathan Parker opened the scoring on 25 minutes and then Kevin Mabon made sure with a quickfire double around the hour mark to put the Derbyshire side's name on the trophy for the first time.
Congratulations to Long Eaton and commiserations to Selby who will, once the initial disappointment disappears, look back on their season with a great deal of pride as well.
In the other Premier Division game played on Saturday, Winterton Rangers claimed a top five finish after a 2-0 win at Nostell Miners Welfare with goals from Matthew Plant and Andy Holt, making it four victories out of four to end their league campaign.
