NCEL Match Review #3
18th August, 2008
Twelve KoolSport NCEL sides made it through to the Preliminary Round of the FA Cup at the weekend with a further two involved in replay action this midweek.
There were five all-NCEL ties and, in keeping with the way the League fixtures have been panning out, it was the away sides who had the greater success.
Kelvin Mushambi's 78th-minute strike saw Long Eaton United progress with a 2-1 win at Arnold Town whilst a triple salvo in six minutes from Winterton Rangers, including two from Danny Clarke, saw them through by beating Barton Town Old Boys 3-1.
That was after Barton had taken the lead in the opening thirty seconds through Tom Lee.
There was late drama at Muglet Lane as Greg Mason scored in the 89th minute to seemingly earn Maltby Main a 3-3 draw at home to Bottesford Town.
But, seconds later, Phil Jackman grabbed his second of the game to send Bottesford through with a 4-3 victory.
Armthorpe Welfare cruised to a 5-0 win at home to Yorkshire Amateur. Gary Jones had them ahead by half-time before they sped away in the second period with goals from Danny Sharpe, Ricky Sharp and a late brace from Stuart Preston.
Then, on Sunday, Pickering Town defeated visitors Liversedge 4-1.
Three teams won on their travels at other League opposition.
Malc Brown scored a couple of late goals as Rainworth Miners Welfare won 2-1 at Dudley Town.
Mickleover Sports were comfortable victors at Wellington as they won 4-1 with goals from Mark Finlay, Liam Walsh, Karl Ashton and Dan Martin.
And, Selby Town wrapped up their 3-1 victory at Seaham Red Star with all their goals in the first half.
A Craig Palmer hat-trick took his tally already for this season to eight as Bridlington Town won 3-2 at home to Guisborough Town.
Darren Fell struck twice as Brodsworth Welfare beat visitors Ashton Town 2-1.
Shirebrook Town progressed with an injury time winner from Nat Watson in the 3-2 victory at home to Causeway United.
And, a Scott Ellis double helped Staveley Miners Welfare to a 3-1 win over visitors Bridgnorth Town.
Oli Johnson earned Nostell Miners Welfare a replay as his last-gasp goal claimed a 3-3 draw at Winsford United.
And, Glasshoughton Welfare left it almost as late to fix up a return tie on Wednesday as Michael Amos struck in the 89th minute to make it 2-2 at home to Billingham Synthonia.
Those sadly bowing out of the tournament were AFC Emley, Dinnington Town, Eccleshill United, Hall Road Rangers, Hallam, Leeds Carnegie, Lincoln Moorlands Railway, Parkgate, Pontefract Collieries, Rossington Main, Tadcaster Albion, Teversal and Thackley.
NCEL new boys Hemsworth Miners Welfare moved to the top of Division One, meanwhile, with a 2-1 win at home to another new side, Grimsby Borough.
Graham Philips earned them the victory on 70 minutes after Ben Mortlock had cancelled out their opener from Lee Swift.
Worsbrough Bridge Athletic are now third after a 4-2 win at Askern Villa with two early goals from Ryan Pleasants setting them on their way although they didn't make sure of the victory until Ryan Poskitt's strike on 89 minutes.
And, it was an eight-goal thriller between another two new clubs as Brighouse Town were held to a 4-4 draw at home to Appleby Frodingham.
Brighouse looked to be on the way to the win when John Booth grabbed his second and his side's fourth to give them a two-goal cushion going into the last five minutes.
But, Ryan Hibbard struck twice for App-Frod to earn them what had seemed to be an unlikely point.
