Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2014/15 #9

8th September, 2014

24 Toolstation Northern Counties East League sides embarked on their FA Carlsberg Vase journey for the 2014/15 season at the weekend but, for half of them, the adventure came to a sudden end.

Seven of them, however, were knocked out of the competition by NCEL rivals whilst the other five were all beaten in tricky away ties at hosts from other leagues.

There will be one replay after Selby Town were denied by a last-gasp equaliser in extra-time in what was a remarkable 5-5 draw at Stockport Sports.

Jamie Forrester, Ryan Robinson, Jack Binns and Matty Start had all scored for the Robins in the opening ninety minutes but a further half-hour was needed as the hosts also found the net four times.

Ryan O'Reilly had seemingly given Selby the win with their fifth midway through the second period of extra-time but the hosts forced a rematch on Tuesday night.

In the all-NCEL ties, an own goal from Jordan Schofield proved decisive as AFC Mansfield went through, 3-2, at home to local rivals Teversal and Hemsworth Miners Welfare progressed by the same scoreline against visitors Parkgate although they almost let a three-goal lead slip in the last half-hour.

Shirebrook Town looked to be on the verge of causing an upset at Retford United when Jamie York gave them a 74th minute lead but the Badgers, through Reece Thompson, Leigh Hutchinson and Liam Nelthorpe, turned the game on its head and fully in the favour of the Premier Division hosts.

Lee Bennett's penalty two minutes from time saw Athersley Recreation through, 2-1, at Staveley Miners Welfare and, in the three Sunday ties, Albion Sports, Clipstone and Worsbrough Bridge Athletic all went through against NCEL opposition.

Karl Hall set Sports on their way with two goals in the opening eleven minutes as they won 5-2 at home to Bridlington Town, Jamie Smith struck four times for Clipstone as they comfortably beat hosts Grimsby Borough, 6-0, and Mark Kokot's winner in the last minute of extra-time saw Worsbrough dramatically through, 3-2 over visitors Pontefract Collieries.

Maltby Main were 3-1 victors at Alsager Town with Martin Jones striking twice in the last eleven minutes to claim the win whilst Cleethorpes Town progressed by beating Loughborough University, 5-2, at the Bradley Football Development Centre.

Danny Stevens calmly converted a penalty in the dying seconds of extra-time to see Louth Town through at the expense of visitors Aylestone Park, 2-1, and a late Lee Holmes double enabled Rossington Main to go into the next round after a 2-0 home triumph over AFC Blackpool.

But, there was disappointment for Penistone Church who lost 4-0 at Atherton Collieries, Knaresborough Town who went down 3-1 at Chester-Le-Street Town, Thackley who were beaten 2-1 at Consett, Eccleshill United who fell to a single goal at West Allotment Celtic and Glasshoughton Welfare had an afternoon to forget as they were thrashed 11-0 at Runcorn Town.

Heanor Town went back top of the Premier Division after goals from Sam Jones, Nathan Benger and Paolo Piliero earned them a 3-0 victory at Liversedge whilst a 5-0 home win over Nostell Miners Welfare saw Handsworth Parramore move up to second spot.

Vill Powell struck twice for the Amber Parras with Sam Smith, Nicky Travis and Lee Whittington also getting on the scoresheet as they climbed above Shaw Lane Aquaforce who rescued a point at Garforth Town thanks to an injury-time goal from Lee Morris in a 2-2 draw.

Tadcaster Albion are now fifth following their 3-2 home victory over Barton Town Old Boys whilst Joe Lumsden scored all four of Armthorpe Welfare's goals but was still on the losing side as they were beaten 5-4 by visitors Pickering Town.

In Division One, AFC Emley won 7-0 at home on Sunday to Hall Road Rangers with Sam Jerome netting a first-half hat-trick as the Pewits go second in the table.

And, in Saturday's three matches, Craig Heard also scored three in Yorkshire Amateur's 5-1 victory at Lincoln Moorlands Railway, Bottesford Town were 6-0 winners at home to Dronfield Town and Hallam were beaten 3-1 at Winterton Rangers.
