Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2016/17 #42

5th January, 2017

The lead at the top of the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division and Division One tables for Cleethorpes Town and AFC Emley, respectively, has grown after they both won their opening games of 2017 this week.

Cleethorpes beat bottom-placed hosts Barton Town Old Boys, 3-0, making them the only victorious side in the seven top-nine Premier Division teams who had a match.

Andrew Taylor put them ahead on 56 minutes before an own goal and then a late Marc Cooper penalty sealed the win that puts them twelve points ahead of second-placed Pickering Town who drew 1-1 at home to fellow top four side Bridlington Town.

Robert Chipps had broken the deadlock for the Pikes before half-time but Nicky McNamara snatched a point for the visitors with an equaliser in the 89th minute.

There were defeats for fifth-placed Handsworth Parramore and sixth-placed Albion Sports with Parramore going down by a single goal at AFC Mansfield, Gary Bradshaw's fifteenth minute strike enough to separate the sides.

Sports, meanwhile, were beaten 8-0 at Staveley Miners Welfare, Callum Mawbey with a hat-trick whilst Adam Lee grabbed a brace and there were also goals for Steven Carty, Shaun Nesbitt and Liam Nelthorpe as the hosts ran riot.

Liversedge and Athersley Recreation are seventh and eighth after they drew 2-2 at Sheerien Park, Joe Walton putting visitors Sedge ahead on the hour before the hosts quickly drew level through Jack Briscoe then took the lead with a Kieran Scargill goal and a late leveller from Simon Wood made sure the spoils were shared.

Worksop Town stay tenth, just ahead of Staveley, after Adam Scott's 84th minute winner earned them a 2-1 home victory over Clipstone and Bottesford Town are now twelfth following their 5-0 success at Rainworth Miners Welfare, Elliot Broughton with two of their goals as the visitors struck three times in the last eleven minutes to rubber-stamp their victory.

Darren Mansaram and Michael Jones netted to move Armthorpe Welfare three points clear of the relegation zone with a 2-0 win at home to next-to-bottom Retford United whilst Parkgate remain in twentieth spot following their 1-1 draw with visitors Garforth Town.

In Division One, Ashley Flynn struck twice as leaders AFC Emley beat basement visitors Nostell Miners Welfare, 5-0, Jordan Coduri, Kieran Ryan and Callum Charlton the other scorers for the Pewits.

The other top three sides both drew with Penistone Church still in second but now five points away from the summit as they were held 1-1 at home by Eccleshill United, Nicholas Truelove putting the away side ahead but Scott Whittington restored parity in the 66th minute.

And, despite a hat-trick from Jack Debnam, Grimsby Borough drew 3-3 with visitors Westella & Willerby, Matthew Lucid's injury-time equaliser making sure the match ended all square.

That means that Nostell are now nine points adrift of Westella who occupy the other relegation zone spot whilst Worsbrough Bridge Athletic remain just outside the bottom two after Kieran Thompson scored in the 85th minute to grab them a 1-1 draw at Campion.

Rossington Main put some more daylight between themselves and Westella, coming from behind with goals from Lee Holmes and Jason Stokes to win 2-1 at home to Shirebrook Town which leaves them still in nineteenth but six points away from danger.

Elsewhere, Hall Road Rangers continued their push for a promotion spot as a Jacob Vernan double helped them to a 4-1 victory over visitors Selby Town to consolidate fifth spot whilst Knaresborough Town won 3-2 at Yorkshire Amateur, courtesy of an 84th minute winner from Brad Walker.

And, it ended all square at Carnarvon Street as Teversal's Craig Mitchell and then Ollerton Town's Joshua Bowkett netted within two minutes of each other in the last quarter-of-an-hour to claim a 1-1 draw.
