11th September, 2016

The 2016/17 Buildbase FA Vase got underway at the weekend with eleven of the thirty Toolstation NCEL teams that took part booking their places in the Second Qualifying Round.

There were six all-NCEL ties with Grimsby Borough providing the biggest shock as the Division One side finished their game with ten men but still won at Premier Division outfit Barton Town Old Boys, 2-0, an own goal and a Renzie Lobendhan strike settling the tie.

Nathan Keightley's double secured a 2-0 win for Glasshoughton Welfare at Dronfield Town whilst Retford United progressed in a roller-coaster game at fellow north Nottinghamshire side Ollerton Town, Charlie Sykes' 57th minute goal earning them a 3-2 victory.

Hemsworth Miners Welare beat hosts Pontefract Collieries, 4-2, Adam Wilson, Nicholas Guest, Dominique Blair and Bill Law on the scoresheet for the Premier Division side.

Penistone Church were comfortable 5-1 winners at Division One rivals Winterton Rangers, Scott Whittington and Andrew Ring making sure of the victory after first-half goals from Carl Giblin into his own net, Daniel Joynes and Dale Kelly.

And, in the only Sunday match, Bridlington Town cantered through to the next stage with a 6-0 home win over Yorkshire Amateur, Joel Sutton getting a couple of the goals for the Seasiders.

Robert Chipps scored once in each half for Pickering Town in their 2-1 victory at AFC Darwen whilst there was also a brace for Elliot Broughton in Bottesford Town's 7-1 demolition of hosts Borrowash Victoria.

Adam Lee got the only goal of the game as Staveley Miners Welfare progressed at the expense of visitors Cheadle Town, Harrison Blakey netted twice in Liversedge's 4-1 win at Thornaby and there were goals for Jamie Forrester and Christopher Spinks as Hall Road Rangers's beat hosts West Allotment Celtic, 2-0.

Sadly, there were defeats for Albion Sports, Armthorpe Welfare, Athersley Recreation, Brigg Town, Eccleshill United, Garforth Town, Knaresborough Town, Maltby Main, Parkgate, Rainworth Miners Welfare, Selby Town, Teversal and Thackley.

In the Premier Division, Cleethorpes Town have moved to the top of the table after their 1-1 home draw with Clipstone, their 35th minute opener from Matthew Bloomer cancelled out in second half stoppage time by Ryan Smith on his debut.

And, Worksop Town won the Sandy Lane derby at the Windsor Foodservice Stadium, beating hosts Handsworth Parramore by a single goal, Adam Scott's strike on 31 minutes taking the points.

Joel Purkiss' goal twenty minutes from time saw Hallam win 1-0 at Nostell Miners Welfare to move them to the summit in Division One.

Worsbrough Bridge Athletic are up to eighth after Lee Garside and Bradley Kerr netted in their 2-1 victory at Rossington Main and two goals from Will Wraith helped Shirebrook Town to a 3-3 home draw with next-to-bottom Westella & Willerby.
