Charity match at Hallam

25th September, 2015

Legends of football are set to take part in a charity match at Hallam's Sandygate ground to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK on Sunday 4th October.

Chris Waddle will bring together a team of former international and Premier League stars, including ex-Sheffield Wednesday stars John Sheridan and David Hirst, to take on a Hallam FC XI in support of Men United.

Chesterfield manager Dean Saunders, ex-Sheffield United midfielder Jamie Hoyland and Jon McClure of Reverend and the Makers have also signed up for the event which will be staged at The Oldest Football Ground in the World with a 2pm kick-off.

The match is in aid of Prostate Cancer UK, who are fighting the most common cancer in men.

Former England international Waddle said: "It is all about raising awareness of prostate cancer. There are a lot of people in the world who have got it. I would think most people know someone who has had it.

"For things to improve, they need money. We have got the little badges with Men United which people can buy on the day.

"We are just looking to contribute in anyway we can. Hopefully this go towards saving people's lives or stopping people developing prostate cancer.

"It is a very worthy cause and all the money raised will help.

"We are going to wear 'Prostate Cancer' on our kit and the shirts that we wear will be auctioned off. Hopefully, the weather will be nice on the day and we will get a good turn-out.

"We are asking all Wednesday, Sheffield United and neutral fans to come along and enjoy the match."

It is the third year in a row that Waddle and Hallam FC have linked up to put on a charity event.

Waddle said: "We were recommended Prostate Cancer UK by John Hemmingham who plays in the England and Sheffield Wednesday band.

"We just thought it would be a good idea. We had a decent response at the event last year and hopefully this one will do very well too and everyone will go away happy."

Match tickets are priced at ?5 and people can add a donation on our JustGiving page which is at www.justgiving.com/chriswaddlematch as your 'Virtual Ticket'.

The 1860 Suite and bar will also be open at Sandygate on the day serving food and drink.

Meanwhile, it's been announced that Bradfield Brewery, the local Sheffield brewery who brew ales such as Belgian Blue and Farmers Blonde, will be the matchday sponsor.

Bradfield Brewery's John Gill said: "We're delighted to be sponsoring the game by becoming the matchday sponsor. Prostate Cancer is a great cause so to be involved is a real honour for us and with so many football legends there too it should be a great day."

Chris Waddle added: "It's fantastic news a local Sheffield company have agreed to sponsor the game. All the money raised on the day will go towards the great work that Prostate Cancer UK undertake so Bradfield's contribution as sponsors is a great start to our fundraising efforts. Hopefully there will be some of Bradfield's finest left for a quick half after the game too."

Bradfield's ales will be on sale on the day at Sandygate and there will be an appearance from their 'bottle' mascot too.
