Commemorative gates unveiled at Penistone

27th July, 2026

Visitors to Macron NCEL Premier Division side Penistone Church will be welcomed differently from now on following the unveiling of new commemorative gates at The Parker Roofing Memorial ground at the weekend.

John Charles Shaw and John Marsh, who were educated at the town's grammar school and went on to help kick-off club football in neighbouring Sheffield, are honoured with Penistone described as "Cradle of the Modern Game of Association Football."

The unveiling, that took place on Saturday at midday, is part of Church's 120th anniversary celebrations after the club's foundation in 1906.

They have been part of the NCEL since 2014 when they joined us from the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League.

Local MPs and council members Hannah Kitching and Marie Tidball were present along with local historians Kevin Neil and Richard Galliford to unveil and formally gift these marvellous gates to the club that support the heritage of their founding football fathers and of football in their local community.

All at the NCEL congratulate Penistone for reaching their magnificent milestone and to everyone involved in the design and construction of the gates.
