Armthorpe Welfare have completed a special community project in partnership with a local graffiti artist, celebrating the life and achievements of one of England's greatest footballers, Kevin Keegan, who was born in the club's village.

The striking mural pays tribute to Keegan's remarkable football journey, which began in Armthorpe before he rose to become one of the most recognised and respected figures in world football.

The artwork has been designed to celebrate both his outstanding achievements on the pitch and his enduring connection to the community where his story started.

Born in Armthorpe in 1951, Keegan's career saw him progress from Scunthorpe United to Liverpool, where he won multiple league titles, an FA Cup, two UEFA Cups and the European Cup.

He later enjoyed tremendous success with Hamburger SV in Germany, becoming one of the few English players to win the prestigious Ballon d'Or twice, in 1978 and 1979.

He also captained England, earning 63 international caps, before later managing both Newcastle United and the England national team.

The mural serves as a powerful reminder that one of football's greatest careers began in the heart of Armthorpe and that talent, determination and ambition can take local youngsters to the very highest level of the game.

A spokesperson for the Macron NCEL Division One side said: "Kevin Keegan's achievements place him amongst the greatest footballers England has ever produced, but for us he will always be one of Armthorpe's own.

"We wanted to create a lasting tribute that celebrates not only his incredible career but also his roots in our village.

"Working with a talented local artist has allowed us to bring that vision to life and create something that the whole community can be proud of."

The project reflects Armthorpe Welfare's commitment to preserving and celebrating the village's sporting heritage while inspiring future generations of players.

It is hoped the mural will become a focal point for residents, supporters, and visitors, helping to strengthen community pride and recognise the village's unique place in English football history.
