NCEL Match Review 2024/25 #50

6th February, 2025

Goals in the first six minutes from Alfie Wilkinson and George Doyle ensured Golcar United a 2-0 home win over visitors Pickering Town on Tuesday night to move up into second spot in the NCEL Premier Division.

It was part of a profitable midweek for four promotion hunting sides that also saw victories for Hallam, Albion Sports and Handsworth.

Hallam climb into fourth after Daniel Buttle's late penalty grabbed the Countrymen a 2-1 win at Rossington Main after Rio Allan's 69th minute opener for them had been cancelled out by Sam Limber.

Sports are now within goal difference of the play-off spots as they turned around a 3-2 deficit at Eccleshill United in dramatic fashion to take the points and consolidate sixth place in the table.

Talent Ndlovu's penalty and an Idris Atta strike had put Eccleshill 2-0 by the 49th minute before Nathan Cartman and Mohammed Qasim struck to bring the scores back level going towards stoppage time.

But, no-one could have predicted what was going to happen next as Callum Thornton restored the hosts advantage as the game went past the 90 minute mark.

Thomas Ponter restored parity once again to make it 3-3 and Aran Basi snatched the points for the Lions to claim a 4-3 victory over their neighbours who stay seventeenth.

Handsworth climb up to seventh, five points away from the play-off zone after Harry Jessop's 76th minute winner secured them a 2-1 defeat of hosts Barton Town.

Fernando Tavares had put the Ambers in front early in the second period before the Swans bounced back with an equaliser from William Waudby.

In Division One, it was also a good midweek for Wombwell Town and Wakefield AFC who strengthened their promotion ambitions with wins to cement third and fourth spot, respectively.

Regan Kelly struck two minutes from time as Wombwell beat hosts Appleby Frodingham 1-0, the defeat for the home side leaving them ten points away from safety in the relegation zone.

Sebastian Losa and Muhamet Gashi netted for Wakefield in a 2-1 home win over Nostell Miners Welfare, Charlie Austerfield with an equaliser for the visitors.

A late leveller from Liam Parker saw South Leeds grab a point as they drew 1-1 with visitors Maltby Main after the Miners had taken the lead through Wade Ripley.

And, first half goals from Akram Lasalire and Thomas Radley secured Shelley a 2-1 victory at Harrogate Railway Athletic, Joseph Navier with a consolation for the Rail midway through the second period.

Meanwhile, there were varying fortunes in the County Cups with a hat-trick from Glen Sani, two goals from Luka Suluburic and one from William Taylor claiming a 6-1 home win for Beverley Town against East Riding Rangers in the Quarter-Finals of the East Riding Senior Cup.

But, Albion Sports went out at the same stage in the West Riding County Cup as they were beaten 3-1 by Route One Rovers in the first of the Lions' two midweek games in a tie that took place on Monday night.
