Nostell boss to run London Marathon for charity

13th April, 2026

Nostell Miners Welfare manager Mathew Wright will be running the London Marathon at the end of the month in support of Autistica, the UK's national autism research charity.

And, it is not just about completing the 26.2 mile-long course a week on Sunday, it is about something far more personal for him.

He explained: "The inspiration of running for Autistica is my son, Oliver, who lives with a diagnosis of autism.

"Each day, Oliver faces challenges that many people never see. From sensory sensitivities to social communication, he has to work harder just to navigate everyday life. Yet he continues to show incredible strength, resilience and character which inspires me.

"By his side, every step of the way, is his mum, Emily. She is Oliver’s rock, a constant source of support and love. Her deepening knowledge of neurodiversity not only helps Oliver thrive but has also shaped the understanding of our whole family.

"She has gently taught our youngest son, Louis, to become empathetic, patient, and supportive of his big brother, and for that, I am endlessly proud of her as she proves daily, what an incredible woman she is.

"Our journey as a family has shown us just how much more we all need to learn, and that’s why I’m passionate about supporting Autistica. Their work goes beyond awareness: they’re uncovering the story behind the story through research that leads to practical solutions, better services, and more understanding.

"Autistica is focused on improving mental health, creating inclusive workplaces, and helping autistic people live longer, happier, and healthier lives. This is the future I want for Oliver and for all those with autistic experiences.

"Running a marathon is a big ask but it’s nothing compared to what Oliver, and so many others like him, overcome every day. If I can do this to help build a better, more understanding world for him, then every mile is worth it."

All at the Macron NCEL wish Mathew the very best in his charity challenge and to anyone else who will be taking part in the London Marathon.
