NCEL Match Review 2024/25 #69

13th April, 2025

Congratulations to Horbury Town whose 4-1 victory at Maltby Main on Saturday afternoon means they are NCEL Division One champions whilst Beverley Town and Hallam both won to book their places in next weekend's Premier Division Play-Off Final.

Horbury went into the last round of matches one point ahead of Wombwell Town knowing that a win would secure them the trophy no matter what happened elsewhere.

Any nerves were quickly extinguished as they raced into a 3-0 lead by the seventeenth minute, Joe Jagger, Abdulrahman Asamoah and Luke Playford with the goals that put the destination of the trophy beyond doubt.

An own goal by Bradley Morton gave them their fourth before Ashley Flynn pulled one back for the hosts prior to the interval.

Remarkably, there were no further goals in the second half but it was job done for Horbury who were presented with the trophy at the full-time whistle.

Wombwell were also 4-1 winners, Jack Dando and Edward Agnew with two goals each at home to Athersley Recreation as they did all they could to have a chance of being champions but they finish second and will host Ilkley Town in the semi-finals of the Division One Play-Offs.

Their opponents next Saturday ended their regular season with a 1-0 defeat at Louth Town, Kieran Perry with the only goal of the game just before half-time for the White Wolves who finish the campaign in fifteenth spot.

Wakefield AFC will be at home to Dearne & District in the other semi-final as they finished third with a 2-1 home win over Brigg Town, Anthony Dwyer and Curtis Morrison with their goals after Ben Vazquez had given the visitors an early lead.

Dearne, meanwhile, won 5-2 in their home clash with South Leeds, Jamie Austin's hat-trick added to by one each for Curtis Wilkinson and Jake Phillis whilst William Law and Wilfred Frimpong netted for the away side.

Worsbrough Bridge Athletic end the season in sixth spot after they moved above Brigg with a 2-2 home draw against Armthorpe Welfare, Finley Durkin and Jake Squires with first half strikes for the Briggers before the visitors snatched a point with goals in the last ten minutes through Jacob Robinson and Alfie Charlotte.

James Danby, Liam Love and Samuel Calvert were the scorers for Selby Town as they secured eighth spot by beating Glasshoughton Welfare 3-2 at the Fairfax Plant Hire Stadium, sandwiching goals for the away side from Liam Flanagan and William Mendonca.

The bottom two met with Yorkshire Amateur and Appleby Frodingham finishing their disappointing seasons with a 1-1 draw, Harry Abson putting the hosts ahead in the 21st minute before Dean McCarthy restored parity midway through the second period.

The other side finishing in the relegation zone, Dronfield Town, were beaten 3-2 at Shelley, Alexander Appleyard and Matthew Ord putting them 2-0 up by the 36th minute but the hosts rallied and turned the game around in the final quarter with a Thomas Radley double and an Akram Lasalire strike.

Alex Ingham, Lucas Robinson and Sam Clothier found the net as Harrogate Railway Athletic brought the curtain down on their campaign with a 3-1 win at Nostell Miners Welfare.

And, Club Thorne Colliery were 1-0 home victors over Swallownest, Adam Baskerville with the breakthrough in the 37th minute that means his side end in eleventh spot, one place above the Rail.

There is one game outstanding in Division One, Shelley's abandoned home clash with Nostell Miners Welfare last month is still going through the County FA's disciplinary process so a league decision on the fate of that game cannot be made until that is completed.

Meanwhile, there were bumper crowds at the two Semi-Finals in the Premier Division Promotion Play-Offs where there were 1-0 wins for Beverley Town at Golcar United and for Hallam at home to Thackley.

1,127 were in attendance to see Luka Suluburic send Golcar through with their vital strike in the 68th minute.

And, the Countrymen also struck at around the same time, Danny South securing passage with his goal in front of 1,358 spectators.

The two winners will now meet at Sandygate next weekend to see who can claim promotion to Step 4 of the FA's National League System in a game that is also expected to be played in front of a massive attendance.
