NCEL Match Review 2024/25 #61

16th March, 2025

Silsden AFC have maintained their four point advantage at the top of the NCEL Premier Division after their 2-0 home win over Penistone Church on Saturday.

Harry Coates broke the deadlock just before the interval and Casey Stewart doubled their advantage on the hour to ensure the Cobbydalers keep their reasonable distance from the chasing pack as Hallam and Golcar United also picked up victories.

Hallam won by the same scoreline, James Cadman and Adam Blakeley with second half goals against visitors Frickley Athletic, to keep themselves in second whilst Golcar remain a further two points behind after their 3-0 win at basement side Winterton Rangers.

George Doyle struck twice for Golcar, once from the penalty spot, after Callum Petch had given them a tenth minute opener against their hosts who now look certain to end the season at the bottom of the table.

The title chase is now realistically down to the top three as fourth-placed Thackley's slim chances of a late challenge came to an end as they were beaten 2-1 at home by Handsworth.

Owen Haigh and Henry Carne put the Ambers two up before Ben Grech-Brooksbank pulled one back for the Dennyboys with eleven minutes to go.

Beverley Town climb into fifth after Adam Stockhill's injury time strike snatched a 2-1 win at Rossington Main after their opening goal from Nathan Ofori had been cancelled out by Oliver Nowak.

They leapfrog Albion Sports who drop out of the play-off positions, a point behind Beverley, following their 2-2 draw in Friday night's Premier Division game.

The Lions, who are the only other side who can catch Silsden but would need to win all of their remaining five games to have even the slightest chance of lifting the trophy, led twice through Thomas Ponter and Junayd Cassius-Gill.

However, the Brewers struck back on each occasion, Kieran Greenway and Daniel Thirkell ensuring the spoils were shared.

Pickering Town's faint play-off hopes were ended as a Jonathan Nyantou goal two minutes from time condemned the Pikes to a 1-0 home loss to Bottesford Town.

Handsworth climb into eighth above Campion who were beaten by a single goal by visitors Barton Town, Fraser Papprill with the matchwinner towards the start of the second period.

Goole AFC came from behind to win 2-1 at Knaresborough Town, James Eyles with both of the Vikings' goals to give his side some cheer in a week where their bottom two finish was confirmed.

And, Harry Day and Spencer Gordon were the scorers for Parkgate as they won 2-1 at home to Eccleshill United, a result that leaves the two sides in thirteenth and sixteenth, respectively.

The three-horse race for the Division One title continues unabated with victories for leaders Horbury Town, second-placed Wakefield AFC and Wombwell Town who are in third.

Gibril Bojang's hat-trick helped Horbury to a 4-0 home win over Harrogate Railway Athletic, James Cusworth concluding the scoring in the 77th minute as his side keep a five point gap from Wakefield.

But, Wakefield have three games in hand on Horbury and have stretched their unbeaten run to 23 matches with their 3-1 win at play-off chasing Worsbrough Bridge Athletic.

Kiyani Clayton put them ahead but the Briggers equalised in first half stoppage time through Keelan Grist before Christopher Salt and Shay Evans-Booth ensured the victory after the break.

An Oliver Fearon brace, added to by a Cian Guest strike, saw Wombwell win 3-0 at Yorkshire Amateur and they stay eight points off the summit with two games in hand.

The defeat, meanwhile, confirmed bottom spot for the hosting Ammers as they notched up their fourteenth straight loss.

The chase for play-off places continues to be a tight one with only Horbury and Wakefield confirmed with a play-off spot if their title challenge proves unsuccessful.

Ilkley Town climb to fourth after their 4-3 home win against Glasshoughton Welfare, Eliel Maville-Anku with a hat-trick of goals, two of which came in the final five minutes as they turned a 3-2 deficit into a victory.

They go above Brigg Town, a point ahead, after the Zebras went down 2-0 at Selby Town, Samuel Calvert's second half double for the Robins keeps them in eighth and they have closed the gap to their visitors to just four points.

Dearne & District missed out on a chance to leap up into the play-off zone as they drew 1-1 at Maltby Main, Taylor Nicholson with a 44th minute equaliser after Ashley Flynn had scored for the hosts, and they stay sixth on goal difference behind Brigg.

And, South Leeds remain in ninth spot, eight points from the top five, as they were held 1-1 by visitors Armthorpe Welfare, Benjamin Agu's opener for the home side cancelled out by Thomas Joynt in first half stoppage time.

Next-to-bottom Appleby Frodingham made it three wins out of four to keep their chances of a Great Escape from the relegation zone going.

A Joshua Fraiwald penalty was added to by Dean McCarthy after Alex Wonham had put hosts Swallownest ahead and App-Frod have closed the gap to safety to four points with four matches remaining in their season.

Nostell Miners Welfare have dropped below the dotted line as they drew 1-1 at home with Club Thorne Colliery, Louis Seddons putting the visitors in front before an equaliser from Lance Friedrich.

Dronfield Town leapfrog Nostell out of the relegation zone as Samuel Bebbington pounced in the 87th minute to give Chris Millington's side a dramatic 2-1 win at Louth Town.

And, in Friday night's game Athersley Recreation were 3-1 victors at Shelley after the hosts had taken a 21st minute lead through Akram Lasalire.

The visitors levelled in the 56th minute with a Nathan Perks penalty before James Woodhouse and Aston Dunstan wrapped up the victory in the closing stages.
