NCEL Match Review 2024/25 #55

23rd February, 2025

Winterton Rangers picked up their first victory since early November to shock Premier Division leaders Silsden AFC on another weekend of twists and turns in the chases for promotion and to avoid relegation at the end of the NCEL season.

They travelled to the table-toppers on the back of a thirteen-match winless streak but got off to the perfect start when Ryan Thompson struck in the opening minute.

Reece Moody then doubled their advantage past the hour mark and Rangers held on to claim a 2-0 win that they hope will kick start a revival in the battle to escape the drop in the coming weeks.

They closed the gap to safety to ten points as Frickley Athletic drew 2-2 with basement side Goole AFC in a bottom three clash.

The visiting Vikings looked to be picking up a massive victory of their own as James Eyles' double strike in first half injury time had them in control until the last ten minutes.

Adam Watson and then Joel Spencer restored parity for Frickley whilst Goole remain bottom, twelve points away from their hosts.

Meanwhile, the chasing pack pounced on Silsden's defeat to close the gap in the hunt for the Premier Division title with second-placed Golcar United winning 4-1 at home to Handsworth to close the gap to the summit to six points.

They flew into a 3-0 lead by the half-hour mark, Joseph Clegg, George Doyle and Ryan Hall netting in the perfect start for Ashley Connor and Gavin Connor's men.

Scott Ruthven pulled one back in the second half for the Ambers but the home side put the game to bed with Clegg's second on 65 minutes.

A brace from Rio Allan secured Hallam a 2-1 win at Bottesford Town to move the Countrymen up into third with Lewis Smith bagging a second half consolation for the hosting Poachers.

Fernando Moke Tumba, Nathan Cartman, Luis Afonso Ferreira and Ryan Conlon netted for Albion Sports as they climb to fourth following their 4-0 home victory over Pickering Town.

Thackley drop to fifth after they let a 3-0 half-time lead slip to draw 4-4 at Rossington Main in a remarkable game.

Ben Grech-Brooksbank's opener was added to by an Antony Brown brace for the visitors and, although Ross Hannah pulled one back for Main in the 47th minute, the Dennyboys restored their three goal advantage through Joseph Mitchell on the hour.

But, Rossington roared back to claim a point as Dylan Mantle, Paul Sherburn and then Hannah with his second in the 89th minute ensured the spoils were shared.

Beverley Town are now just a point away from the play-off zone in sixth as a James Piercy double, added to by Elliott Andrew and Glen Sani, secured a 4-1 home win over Parkgate.

Campion climb into seventh after withstanding a late Tadcaster Albion comeback to claim a 3-2 victory in Friday night's game.

Joe Wood's early spot kick and a Harvey Booth double had them seemingly in control until goals in the last ten minutes from Jamie Tomlinson and James Knowles almost brought the Brewers back on level terms.

And, there were two goals each for Samuel Scrivens and Nathan Keightley for Penistone Church as they won 5-3 at Barton Town to move up into ninth whilst the Swans remain in eleventh.

In Division One, points were dropped by the top two sides as leaders Horbury Town and second placed Wombwell Town were held to draws at home.

Gibril Bojang equalised for Horbury after Adam Baskerville had put Club Thorne Colliery ahead as their clash finished 1-1.

Meanwhile, Ethan Fox's injury time leveller grabbed a point for Wombwell after Akram Lasalire had struck twice for Shelley in a 2-2 draw that also saw Joshua Nodder score for the home side.

Third placed Wakefield AFC are fully back in the title chase as Romario Dunne scored the only goal of the game in their home victory over South Leeds that means Stephen Bodle's side are now ten points behind Horbury but with four matches in hand.

Brigg Town and Dearne & District won on their travels to keep themselves in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Scott Hutchinson and Joshua Batty scored for Brigg in a 2-1 win at play-off rivals Ilkley Town, the hosts remaining seventh after the defeat that included a goal for them from Alfie Dean.

And, Justin Circuit struck twice as Dearne beat Harrogate Railway Athletic 3-1, Bayley Lowe also getting on the scoresheet for them whilst Sam Clothier converted for the Rail.

Worsbrough Bridge Athletic keep themselves within touching distance of the top five after Keelan Grist netted to win 1-0 at home to Selby Town.

In the day's bottom three clash, Nostell Miners Welfare overcame conceding in the opening twelve seconds to beat visitors Appleby Frodingham 5-3.

Joshua Fraiwald put the away side in front in the blink of an eye with the first of his brace but the hosts were 4-2 up by the interval as Jordan Chippendale, Gracjan Klimczak, Cyrus Rowe and Charlie Austerfield all found the net.

Klimczak's second in the 81st minute secured the win after Joel Chapman had brought App-Frod back to within a goal of the home side.

Nostell remain in the drop zone on goal difference whilst their opponents stay next to bottom and are now eleven points away from safety.

Basement side Yorkshire Amateur are a further three points adrift as they went down 2-1 at home to Swallownest, Adam Simpson with their late consolation after goals for the visitors for Alex Wonham and Oliver Grey.

Dronfield Town are just above Nostell, outside the trapdoor, after their 5-3 loss at Glasshoughton Welfare in a game where Alexander Clarke went goal crazy scoring four times for the hosts who climb to eleventh.

Louth Town have leapfrogged Dronfield to move to two points clear of danger as Harry Jacklin, Alfie Usher, Adam Millson, Jack Barlow and Ethan Fretwell were scorers in their 5-1 defeat of visitors Athersley Recreation.

And, second half goals from Steven Taylor and Ashley Flynn ensured a 3-1 win for Maltby Main at home to Armthorpe Welfare.
