NCEL Match Review 2024/25 #20

3rd October, 2024

NCEL Premier Division leaders Penistone Church have now suffered back-to-back defeats after a midweek loss at Thackley that saw the hosts climb to third, three points off the summit.

Church had been given a first half lead by Leon Hurles-Brook but the hosts turned the game around in the second period with Ben Grech-Brooksbank's equaliser added to by an Antony Brown brace to make it 3-1 to the Dennyboys.

Hurles-Brook's second of the evening halved the deficit for Penistone but they could not find a third as they went down 3-2.

Albion Sports are up to second, also three points off the top, following their 3-1 victory at Parkgate, Dominic Staunton, Eisa Faulding and Nathan Cartman with the Lions' goals whilst Liam Tomlinson netted what was an equaliser for the Steelmen.

A further point behind in fourth are now Golcar United who, thanks to a 76th minute strike from Keegan Hartley, beat visitors Eccleshill United by a single goal.

A dramatic 2-1 win for Handsworth sees them up into sixth after their victory at home to Frickley Athletic.

Scott Ruthven had given the hosting Ambers a fourteenth minute lead and that held until stoppage time when Jack Cawthorn had seemingly rescued a point for the away side but Ruthven then pounced with his second of the evening to claim the win for his side.

Winterton Rangers have moved out of the bottom two after Oakley Hill's early strike secured a 1-0 home victory over Beverley Town.

Four goals were shared between Hallam and their visitors Barton Town with Brodie Litchfield putting the hosts in front and Thomas Waudby levelling in the first half.

Then, in another game that proved breathtaking in injury time, Rio Allan gave the Countrymen the lead once more before Grant Tait salvaged a 2-2 draw for the visitors with virtually the last kick of the game.

And, Omar Sanyang's spot kick put Pickering Town ahead but Mason Wilson's strike pegged them back as they drew 1-1 at hosts Tadcaster Albion.

In Division One, leaders Horbury Town maintained top spot as they won 2-0 at home to Brigg Town, James Cusworth and Jock Curran netting in the middle of each half to claim the victory.

Dearne & District rise to second, three points behind the leaders, courtesy of a 1-0 win at Glasshoughton Welfare with Luke Skelton grabbing a first half injury time winner.

2-1 victories for Maltby Main and Athersley Recreation see them fourth and fifth, respectively, Alex Washington's opener for Main cancelled out by Kadey Phillips before an own goal secured them the win over visitors Appleby Frodingham.

And, despite a goal back by Ilkley Town's Alfie Dean, the Rec were successful on their travels with earlier strikes from Nathan Perks and Carter Tingle.

South Leeds climb to eighth as they had half a dozen different scorers in their 6-3 win over hosts Swallownest, Ryan McKendry, Benjamin Agu, William Law, Mohammad Sadiq, James Law and Tyler Bussue finding the net for the visitors.

Liam O'Brien, Alex Wonham and Spenser Sheppard were on the scoresheet for Swallownest in a game that saw a roller-coaster first half that ended 3-3 before the visitors took control in the second period.

Louth Town and Wakefield AFC were both 3-1 home victors, a Bailey Wright double helping Louth to a win over Armthorpe Welfare whilst Akeel Francis did the same in Wakefield's match against Shelley.

Meanwhile, Connor Glavin struck twice for Worsbrough Bridge Athletic as they put some daylight between themselves and the bottom two with a 4-2 home win against Nostell Miners Welfare.

Two Division One games were abandoned with Wombwell Town's match at home to Selby Town called off after 78 minutes due to a serious injury to the home side's Cian Guest and all at the NCEL wish him well for a speedy recovery.

And, floodlight failure saw Harrogate Railway Athletic's clash with visitors Club Thorne Colliery halted at half time.

Heavy rain at the start of the week led to a few postponements with Rossington Main's Monday night Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup First Round tie with Swinton Athletic called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

A similar fate befell Goole AFC's home game against Silsden AFC and Bottesford Town's trip to Knaresborough Town in the Premier Division on Tuesday whilst, on the same night, Yorkshire Amateur's match with visitors Dronfield Town also fell victim to the weather in Division One.
