Big crowd watches Hallam's Premier League friendly
7th August, 2019
Hallam enjoyed their biggest crowd in recent years as 1,024 packed into Sandygate to watch the Toolstation NCEL Division One hosts take on a strong Sheffield United side on Tuesday night.
Although the attendance was not a record at the world's oldest football ground - that still stands at an estimated 2,000 for a game back in 1959 - it was still the highest in a long time, leaving chairman Steve Basford absolutely delighted.
He told the club's website: "What a brilliant evening for the club!
"There are so many people I'd like to thank, particularly Sheffield United for bringing such a strong side, everyone who turned up on the night and made it such a great atmosphere, all of our sponsors, and our army of volunteers, especially Jane and the bar staff and Ann in the tea cabin."
The Blades, who start their Premier League campaign on Saturday following promotion from the Championship, brought several first team regulars and a strong under-23 contingent to take part in the game that ended 3-0 in favour of the visitors although Hallam can be delighted with their performance.
Up next for the Countrymen is their Extra Preliminary Round tie in the Emirates FA Cup at home to NCEL rivals Staveley Miners Welfare with another big crowd expected for the match that takes place on Sunday, kick-off 3pm.
