Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2022/23 #71

3rd May, 2023

Just three days after celebrating promotion to Step 4 for the first time in their history, Winterton Rangers lifted the Toolstation NCEL League Cup trophy on Tuesday night.

Scott Hellewell's side did not have long to recover from the weekend's long trip to Essex where they beat Coggeshall Town 2-1 in the Step 4/5 Inter-Step Play-Offs.

And, they faced a tough opponent in Premier Division rivals Golcar United who were looking to become cup winners in their first season in the NCEL.

The match, played at Doncaster Rovers' Eco-Power Stadium in front of a crowd of 810, was a tight affair with no goals scored in the opening period before things opened up a little in the second half.

Luke Anderson netted his tenth goal of the season on 56 minutes to put Winterton ahead but Golcar quick retaliated with an equaliser from their top scorer Kayle Price as he took his campaign tally to 30.

United then found themselves down to ten men following the dismissal of Leon Henry on the hour mark before Rangers regained their advantage ten minutes later as Samuel Aynsley scored directly from a corner.

Rangers almost doubled their lead when player/assistant manager Paul Grimes hit the bar with a looped effort but there was no further addition to the score with Winterton running out 2-1 victors.

Congratulations to Winterton who lift the trophy for the second time, fifteen years after their previous success, whilst Golcar can reflect on an excellent inaugural season in the NCEL with a Cup Final appearance and ninth position in the Premier Division table.
