Toolstation NCEL Match Review 2022/23 #61

23rd March, 2023

Winterton Rangers have tightened their grip on second spot in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division after an entertaining 4-2 victory at Handsworth in midweek.

That, coupled with third-placed Emley AFC's 3-3 draw at Golcar United, means Rangers are seven points clear of the Pewits.

But, Emley have two games in hand and the two sides meet at the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground on Saturday meaning there is still everything to play for in the chase for the Inter-Step Play-Offs.

Winterton can still mathematically catch leaders North Ferriby following their victory but the Villagers will lift the title on Saturday if they avoid defeat at Thackley.

Rangers' win came courtesy of two goals each for brothers Josh and Dan Walker whilst Jonathan Williams and Joe Parkin netted for Handsworth who stay fifteenth.

Emley, meanwhile, were denied victory by Daniel Naidole's second of the evening for Golcar on 85 minutes after Stephen Smith, Paul Walker and Samuel Pashley had scored for the visitors.

The only movement in the Premier Division table came after Albion Sports' 3-0 home victory over relegated Yorkshire Amateur, courtesy of a hat-trick, including two penalties, for Hass Gorji.

The Lions leap over Thackley who went down by the same scoreline to away side Knaresborough Town, Benjamin Parkes, Ewan Gregson and Luke Jones sealing an ultimately comfortable win.

Christopher Salt scored twice as sixth-placed Hallam were 4-1 victors at Silsden AFC, the Countrymen remaining four points clear of Barton Town in seventh after the Swans won 2-1 at Eccleshill United.

Harrison Coley's penalty and Kian Salter's strike earned the visitors the win after Devonte Newman-Morton had put the hosting Eagles ahead.

The top four sides all won in Division One with leaders Campion maintaining an eight-point gap over second-placed Harrogate Railway Athletic with a 5-2 win at Glasshoughton Welfare.

Patrick Sykes and Marcus Day gave them a two goal cushion by the interval before an Aidan Day double sealed the victory with Ashley Flynn adding a fifth in between a brace from Nathan Perks for the hosts.

Jacob Robertson, Elliot Holmes and Daniel Thirkell were the scorers in the Rail's 3-1 win at Dronfield Town and third-placed Rossington Main beat hosts Shirebrook Town 2-1 to keep a point behind them in third.

Manasse Kianga's opening minute goal for Main was cancelled out before half-time by Kian Tansley but Jordan Buckham claimed what proved to be the winner early in the second period.

And, fourth-placed Wakefield AFC are on the verge of clinching a play-off place after their 2-0 victory at Nostell Miners Welfare, Jake Morrison and Owen Kirman finding the net in the final quarter-of-an-hour.

Retford FC keep themselves well in the hunt for the fourth play-off spot after Kyle Simpson, Graeme Severn and Kenan McKenzie-Gray netted in a 3-1 win at Selby Town.

Elsewhere, Swallownest have climbed out of the bottom three with a Jack Haslam double added to by Leighton Sawyer as they defeated hosts Ollerton Town 3-0 with Shirebrook replacing them in the relegation zone.

And, two goals for Joe McFadyen helped Beverley Town to a 3-2 home defeat of Armthorpe Welfare and they stay eleventh and ninth, respectively.

Meanwhile, it will be an all-NCEL Final in the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup after Maltby Main's shoot-out win over Sheffield.

Elliott Simpson quickly equalised for the Miners after their visitors had taken a first minute lead and it stayed at 1-1 throughout the ninety minutes and extra-time with Main going through 3-2 on penalties to face Emley for a chance to lift the trophy.
