Pilgrims' Patch now available

29th August, 2022

A new book looking at Lincolnshire football, including those who have taken part in the Toolstation NCEL, is now available to order.

Did you know England’s first FA Cup entrants from outside London came from Lincolnshire and that the county has been home to five Football League clubs?

And that Grimsby Town boast the oldest stand still in use in the Football League and a village club’s changing rooms used to be a prisoner of war camp cinema?

These and many more fascinating snippets can be found in Pilgrims’ Patch – the football grounds of Lincolnshire, by Steven Penny, that mentions every club, down to parks football level – a total of more than 160 – including all current and former NCEL members.

As well as informative sections about all the county’s teams in the top eleven levels of the national game, with ground guides, maps, team colours and badges, there are more than 300 pictures.

Also included is a comprehensive history section, featuring clubs and grounds of the past, including Ashby Institute, The Old Show Ground and York Street, as well as dozens of programme covers from current and past teams across the county.

Author Penny said: “I was travelling back and forth across Lincolnshire, while looking to move house, and kept noticing football grounds in even the smallest town and village.

“I used to be the programme editor at Selby Town and have many happy memories of my trips 'south of the border' to the likes of Brigg, Immingham, Appleby Frodingham, Barton and Winterton, etc.

“However, I came across some lovely grounds that are off the beaten track, such as Moulton Harrox, Limestone Rangers and Market Rasen, as well as those in the Lincolnshire League.

“I searched in vain for a book about the county’s grounds so decided to write one myself. Local football historian Martyn Girdham, from Winterton, got in touch with lots of background and historical information and added a whole new section to my plans.

“I’m really pleased with the finished product and hope it allows many ‘groundhoppers’ to discover the footballing delights of Lincolnshire.”

The full-colour, 166-page paperback book is available from Amazon – click here – at £15.99.
